Organic vs nonorganic milk

My family doesn't understand why my daughter only gets organic milk to drink. One of them said that I'm giving her sick milk to drink. I still get annoyed at people that don't understand why I spend the extra money to get organic milk for my 2 yr old. She's so young, that I don't see why she needs to have hormones and antibiotics in her milk, especially since she is growing and developing so quickly. I feel that I don't want to risk it with her while she is so young.

I guess I feel that I need to explain the difference between organic and non-organic milk.

Cows that produce organic milk are grass-fed animals that are not given antibiotics and other hormones to promote their growth. They feed on grass that is free from chemical fertilizer and pesticides. Because they are eating grass, which is their natural diet, and not grain, they do not get sick and need the antibiotics.

A cow that is fed grain, which is difficult for the cow to digest, is given antibiotics to combat the sickness the cow gets from eating the grain and other offal that is given to them.

However, both cows can suffer from mastitis and are milked in the same methods. As such, pus and blood from the cow's injured udders can be found in the milk. The US does not have as stringent laws regarding the amount of pus that is allowed in the milk as in european countries. The allowable amount in the US is double the amount allowed in Europe. However, since all the milk we get is pasteurized, it kills most of the bacteria in the milk that could make us sick.

My family says that we were all raised on non-organic milk and we came out okay. Yes, but how old are we now? Do you believe that the milk and beef industry is the same as it was when we were young? If anything, it has become more commercialized as demand has increased. These beef producers obviously are cutting corners to meet the demand. We also are dealing with less natural resources, more pollution, and overall contamination of our planet. These factors must be affecting our meat supply as well as other food sources. You cannot believe that it is the same quality as when we were kids.

The number of kids with autism has more than tripled over the last decade. Though the exact cause is unknown, I think the food that we eat has a lot to do with it. The beef industry pollutes our planet a lot, so different factors all together could be the cause of the increase in autism. What little I can do to help my kid grow up the best she can, I will do.
