Apparently dogs are still abandoned after vacations in Southern Italy. Is this also a trend in the US?

I cannot understand why or how anyone could just abandon an innocent pet. It angers me but, I have to say it breaks my heart for those little babies!

My daughter just moved back to the USA after living in Italy for three years. She was so sad about all the abandoned dogs and cats! We have a terrible problem here too. We have winter visitors who leave each spring and sometimes leave their pets behind too. It's criminal.

Parents get the pet right befire the summer to then abondon them right before it's time to get back to their main residences. I thought this ended in the 90's. Being there for a week, I saw abandoned dogs everywhere right after the end of August... terrible!
