New Fish

I recently added four new female bettas to my little school of fish, making my grand total eleven. It's always nerve wracking brining in new fish, especially with bettas. I hate seeing fighting and fin ripping but I know they have to establish their pecking order. It seems like everyone has finally settled down though. Astraea is definately the boss, mostly because she is the largest out of all of them. I got the new females from PetCo. I was so tempted to bring home this male crowntail too but I have to find a place to put a tank for him. He was a yellow crowntail with purple edging on his fins, absolutely breathtaking :)

Do you have the males and the females in the same tank? You'll be having babies soon if you do. You have to put the adults in another tank as soon as you notice babies. I made the mistake of not getting to it quick enough. I was horrified when I discovered that the parents ate their children in just a few hours.

I definately don't have males and females together. They are betta fish and will kill each other if I did that. Males have to be kept by themselves and females can only go with other females. Thanks for the blog comment :)

I am so misinformed. I thought that you couldn't have males together because they're fighting fish and the males fight. When I had a male and female they got along fine.

I was eyeballing the Beta's at the pet store yesterday and checking out aquariums. I'd like to have at least 2 gallons for a Beta. The males were in water with blue die so it made it hard to see what they really looked like. When did they start that practice?

Sometimes you can get lucky and have a male and a female that will tolerate each other. I have one female who would kill any fish that is put in with her, whether it is male or female. The blue dye you mentioned is "betta rescue", it's supposed to keep them from getting sick. Clean water works much better in my opinion :) Atleast two gallons is definatelty the way to go.
