My thoughts on the challenge

I joined Cully's 30 Day challenge to see if I could find healthier and more humane alternatives to meat. I don't believe that eating meat is a bad thing if animals are treated in a humane way.

That being said . . Cully has put it out there for people to become more aware of the vegetarian alternative lifestyle. Great thing and it's fun sharing recipes and thoughts about it.

But . . I don't think this should turn into a bad sales pitch and overpower what we are doing on zoo too or make people feel left out. Bad thing. Everyone here is for the animals . . we don't need to overwhelm zootoo with journals, e-mails and photos about getting people to join the 30 day challenge. Cully put it out there . .if people want to join, they can. Remember why we are here . . to share our love of animals .. not to isolate people or make them feel bad for not making the same choices you do.

On another topic . . has anyone but Lourie read my journal on Simone's visit to her rescue this weekend???

Obviously he has never owned chickens. My husband thought it would be good for our son to raise a flock. We had Roadhouse Reds, and others well mixed in- anyhow they got huge eating donuts brought home from my husbands parents business. One of them was a fancy rooster that we were told they get thrown in to the mix.He was beautiful but mean!!
I could not even go out to get the mail. The boys would attack you.My mail carrier was laughing so hard one day when I went out to get a package.I had to carry a broom to be safe!He said they were the biggest chicken he ever saw!
We ended up giving them away to a guy whose wife wanted them as pets.I did not have the heart to kill them or give them to someone who would.
They kicked the crap out of his turkeys .lol.He ended up separating them and they did live out a long "chicken life".Turkeys should be way bigger than chickens.lol

I think thoughts about eggplant, etc, don't really belong in the main part of ZT. But why not have a separate GROUP expressing whatever, so long as it harms no one? Cully sees a clear connection between loving animals and not eating meat (but still, of course, feeding factory meat to our animals...) so why not put it somewhere out of the mainstream here?

Your insistence on adopting your puppy makes me glad I didn't face a rigorous test when I adopted my puppy, or let in my first stray cat! Rescues and shelters (including the one where I volunteer now) can try to control the future a bit too much sometimes. I'm glad you got to prove to them that they were wrong.

That's why I like you - the subtle, often overlooked counterpoint!

Thanks! This woman means well but she does go way over the edge and I'm not the only person she has pulled that with.

I think Cully did a great thing by putting the option out there. If I could have gotten my family to agree to try it, I'd have given it a shot. I don't eat a lot of meat and often go days without any, but I know I can't cook double meals. I don't feel isolated in any way. I've been following the journals and have checked out the recipes with interest. To me, the big issue is to work towards the humane treatment of animals bred for consumption. I'm going to check out your other journal right now....

I don't see where the challenge is making "anyone feel bad" unless they are feeling bad for their own reasons. The challenge is simply that, plus a forum for discussing the issues and a great place to find vegetarian or vegan recipes. There is a lot of support from others for those who choose to take "Cully's Challenge".

There is always a lot of support for our Zootoo friends who face various challenges of their own; such as the loss of a pet or for a pet that has gone missing (Peyton, come home!!). There is support for the wonderful folks who rescue stray cats and dogs; and support for those who love to post great photos of their zoo!

Let us celebrate this web site and these forums and remember that we are here, in one way or another, for the animals.

I agree. Someone will only feel bad about this if they allow that feeling in, to begin with. What is to feel bad about? That is just silliness or weakness. I make my own decisions for my life, no need to cave into what anyone else thinks or does! JMHO

Well said, Jennifer! I could not agree with you more. It is each person's personal choice and should not be the beginning of a battle as to which side you are on. To me, the most important thing to remember is why we are all here! This is a great journal and I am so thankful you put it here to help with some of the bad feelings that may have been created! As for your other journal about Simone's visit, I am going to go check it out, pronto!

Sparkle, ONE person who was trying to impress me sent out an email that was probably two sentences long. I told that person not to write emails, but their enthusiasm got the best of them. The journal that was written about that email was, in my opinion, a bit of an overreaction to that email and I suspect it has more to do with me and my opinion. There is certainly enough fluff on this site that a meaningful topic shouldn't dampen anyone's enthusiasm. I have addressed the e-mailer and consider the issue resolved.

I think we keep things to the group journals if we want to talk about our Challenge.
