How LHS spent your money

Little does the community know that the "contract" for this work went to the son of the Secretary of LHS and he also happens to be the Nephew of the President of LHS. And the general expense account, well that also pays for the salary of the President of LHS, Mrs. Sandra Frye. Nothing like keeping the money all in the family.

Trying to give the animals a nicer place to call home, the folks at the Liberty Humane Shelter cracked open the piggy bank containing their recent Zootoo.com winnings and did a little remodeling. “We expanded the cat room so it has an outdoor run area,” shelter President Sandra Frye said. “We are adding additional drainage to the kennels and we are upgrading some of the wiring to be able to get an additional dryer.” She said they wanted to extend the indoor cat room to allow the felines access to the outside through a kitty door. “As everybody knows the drainage in the kennel area was lacking,” she said. “It only had one drain in the middle and that was just not adequate. The best plan for a kennel is to have the feces wash behind the kennel so that is what we are having done. We are installing a six-inch drain connecting all six of the kennels to run through the middle and out the back.” Frye said they are also updating the wiring to add another dryer. “We have four washing machines right now but only one dryer,” she explained. “We are having more electrical work done so we can run another dryer.”
Contractors John Braun and John Mote recently knocked out the concrete in the kennel area for the drains and framed up the exterior cat room. Last Wednesday, Frye said the work was complete and the cats ventured out for the first time.
“They are a little freaked out, but they are adjusting quickly,” she said. The shelter won $10,000 for making the top 10 finalist list in this year’s shelter makeover contest sponsored by Zootoo.com and their corporate sponsors.
The 2010 shelter makeover contest starts in October and Frye say they plan to try again. “We are going to do it,” she said. “We are going to try and do it again and at least try to get in the top 20 and top 10 again. $10,000 a year will help us out and get us closer, little by little.”
In the meantime, Frye said most of the Zootoo money was added to their expense account which is used to pay for the medical expenses and care for the animals.

By the way, as their former volunteer coordinator, I estimated the cost of building the cat pen to be $1,000.00 and posted it on their website. I wonder how much was actually paid to Mr. Braun, in total?

Thanks for sharing the update on the shelter.
I cast all my votes for LHS and was hoping they would win. I hope everyone in Georgia gets behind this shelter for the next Zootoo.com since you seem to have the strongest network of volunteers and are very active in their support.

I have no problem with them hiring a family member or a friend--that is probably why they got so much bang for their bucks!

At least that is what they told me.
I've missed your first 2 meetings for your new group. Is it a Liberty County group or Long County. I would like to do a write up on it in the future
