Henry

I haven't written about the old man for a while so I figure it's time for a bit of an update.

With Vivian gone, Henry has lost one of his office mates. I wonder how this is impacting his health.

Henry came to us skin and bones and missing his "family" despite the fact that he was a junk yard dog. He was nursed back to good health and is now at a proper weight, maybe a little on the chubby side but still healthy.

But is having Vivian gone affecting him? He seems the same to me, a very happy 10 year old with the energy of a pup half his age.

But Vivian was his day long companion for so long. And the love she showed him.

Does he feel abandoned? Or am I anthropomorphizing things too much?

I think, over the past few weeks, Henry has been getting more walks than previously because I've been introducing him to volunteers every chance I get. I let him out when I have a few minutes and I know Kathi walks him every lunch break she can.

I know my critters know who I am and I know some of the shelter animals know me too. So, that begs the question, when an animal leaves the shelter, do they miss the staff they've come to know? What sorts of settling in problems do they have in their new, forever home?

When a dog is brought to LHS and after its been evaluated, I have noticed that on walks for varying lengths of time the dog seems to be very interested in every car that drives by. I'm told that it could be the dog looking for its person/people. Very sad.

And then they get accustomed to us.

For the lucky ones, they get adopted.

When they're in their new home, do they look for us?

How would Henry and Sweets do in a home after so much time at LHS?

And what would we do without them?

Henry is very comfortable at LHS. Sweets may be too comfortable at LHS. She's such a diva and so spoiled. But they would have to be better off in a home.

Henry is doing well, getting his love and his walks from us but does he miss his old office mate? But how is Vivian doing without him?

I don't think they ever forget people they once knew and loved and that includes favorite staff and volunteers. I think if years went by before they saw their loved one again, they would remember. There's a lot we don't know about the mind and emotions of animals.

Of course I'm just speculating, but I think dogs are really resilient. I do believe they miss people. I do believe they are happy when they see those people. I do believe that they will never forget someone who was important in their life. I would expect Henry to give Vivian a big greeting if he didn't see her again until five years from now. I would hope that Tonto would give me a big greeting. I suspect Vivian misses Henry the way I miss Tonto.

As far as knowing the shelter staff. I'm convinced that some of the critters absolutely love the staff. I had Rock Star out yesterday and Juan was leaving LHS on his bicycle. Juan greeted Rock Star (actually said good bye) as he rode past. Rock Star lunged toward him and focused on him for what seemed like a good two minutes after he was out of sight and probably past the light rail. I believe he wanted to go with Juan or wanted him to come back.

Just after I got his attention, Melanie came walking by. Rock Star had to greet her and focused on her while she walked away.

When they find a good home I don't think they say "This is really cool; screw LHS; I'm glad I'm out of there." I suspect what they say is "This is really cool; I wonder how my buddies at LHS are doing, but I'm glad to be here with my new human."
