Garnier/L'Oreal

A couple of days ago I purchased a box of haircolor. When I was reading the insert/instructions, I noticed that there wasn't any info on their animal testing policy so I emailed the company (Garnier/L'Oreal). This was the response I received. A simple yes or no would have sufficed.

The safety of our consumers is our highest priority at Garnier, a division of
L'Oréal USA, Inc. Our products and ingredients undergo extensive screening so
that consumers may purchase and use our products with complete confidence.

All the brands of the L'Oréal Group are in full compliance with the requirements
for safety in the more than 130 countries in which our products are sold, as
well as with FDA regulations and the European Union 7th Amendment Cosmetic
Directive.

At this time, certain national or international regulations continue to require
animal testing to validate the safety of cosmetic ingredients. These
requirements also apply to the pharmaceutical and other industries. However,
the European Union 7th Amendment Cosmetic Directive mandates the ending of
animal testing to establish the safety of cosmetics raw materials by 2009, and
sets a cutoff of 2013 for more complex tests.

L'Oréal has been committed to the elimination of animal testing for more than 20
years. In 1989, the company ceased animal testing for safety assessment of its
finished products. L'Oréal has also been very proactive in developing
alternatives to animal testing. One of these alternatives is Episkin - a
pioneering reconstructed human skin technology that L'Oréal has developed since
the 1980s, and that L'Oréal now routinely uses to assess the tolerance
evaluation of our products. L'Oréal also remains committed to developing more
alternative methods in the future.

In April 2007, the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods
(ECVAM) validated Episkin as a full replacement method for testing on animals
for the assessment of skin-irritancy. As a further demonstration of L'Oréal's
commitment to the elimination of animal testing, L'Oréal has made the Episkin
model available for use by the entire scientific community, including the
chemical, pharmaceutical, consumer products and cosmetic industries.

Wow... I'm glad I don't use them products. But you bet I will spread the word of their animal testing.
