Donating Dog's blood

I live in St. Louis and we have been suffering through the floods, and there have been a ton of news articles about the misplaced animals and the shelters needing help, etc. However, the most recent newscast that caught my eye was something I have never heard of - a dog blood bank. The St. Louis Animal Blood Bank provides blood for animals that need it in cases of emergency. They were saying that in the past, when blood was needed, they would have to send a worker home to get one of their own dogs and bring it to the clinic for blood, but now they have it on hand! It does look a little risky, as they have to take the blood from the jugular vein and their is a machine that turns on and hums, but they say that speeds up the process taking it from that area. I just think this is amazing and that people are bringing their dogs in to do this is just fantastic. Unfortunately, for my area bank, my dog doesn't meet the weight requirement, otherwise I would be their with dog on leash as quickly as possible.

They didn't mention blood types for dogs, but they do seperate blood parts into red cells and plasma. Also, they did say they usually didn't take cat donations because cats have to be sedated for donation. You can read more by typing in animal blood banks in a search engine - that's how I found my information. There are two here in the St. Louis area.

I agree with everyone, this is a great idea. I donate blood, and often wondered where the animals get it if they needed it in an emergency. Fill us in on the weight requirements if you can. I also wonder if the animals blood type differ like humans do or do they all have the same type?

GOOD QUESTION...........let's hope we get a good answer.

This is something I'd never thought of -- where does blood come from if your dog's in surgery and needs blood? There must be animal blood banks, or veterinary surgeons keep some units of animal blood on hand for such things. Also wondering if there are supplies of blood plasma for dogs/cats? I have many more questions than comments, as you can see. This is fascinating, and what a lifesaver! Animal blood banks!

I had heard about this maybe a year ago and think that it's wonderful. It isn't harmful for the donor dog. I did forget how often that they can donate. Technology always amazes me.

Since we live in the same city, what are the weight requirements/ I know my pup isn't there yet, but I am fairly confident he will will be once he is done growing.

I watched a show on Animal Planet a few years ago about kidney transplants for cats. It was pretty neat. They don't have to match like they do humans. They have a stray cat and use one of its kidneys, but the catch, other than the cost, is that you have to take and care for the stray, too. It was a touching story. The owner was as crazy about the donor cat as he was his recipient cat.

That is AMAZING (about the kidney donor cats)! Wow! I don't get cable tv, but that must have been one VERY interesting program!
