Saint Tammany Humane Poets Society

We're all poets at heart! Join us as we pen our pride and passion in pentameter. Quality is not required so drop your inhibitions and post your poems here. SILLY IS ACCEPTABLE - SO DON'T BE SHY!

Here's how it got started:

LINDA L WROTE:
In Covington, LA there's a shelter
that saves many dogs from the welter,
More money is needed
to keep them all feeded
To Zootoo we go - gotta skelter!

AND:
I live with a friend I call Izzy,
Who's funny and furry and frizzy.
She's a bright little torti,
Who's always been sporty,
And races and plays 'til she's dizzy!

AND CHALLENGED LISA J, WHO WROTE:

So Linda L, you asked for this,
the challenge is on, don't be remiss!

You wrote a ditty,
about your kitty,
I must admit that it was cute!
and my laughter became a hoot!

Can't wait to see what you have next
and when you pen it,send me a text!

AND LINDA L WROTE:
There once was a vet who was clever.
"A poet?" she thought, "oh me, never!"
But each day while she worked,
Her mind went berserk,
And her words began rhyming forever!

ETH911 JOINED IN AND WROTE:

I'm in:

My house is a mess
so is my desk
but I can't stand to be #2
It will be much more fun
when this contest is won
so I'll keep logging on to ZooToo.

AND LINDA L WROTE:
An orange and white tabby named Sunny
Fills my life with affection and honey.
He loves to be squeezed And with petting he's pleased. He's my charming and sweet Sunny-Bunny.

AND THIS WONDERFUL POEM BY JERRI B. WAS POSTED:

Once upon a time
There was a little ant.
All the larger ants,
Named him "Little Cant".
They thought because he was so small
He couldnt carry much at all.
But little did they know, at night, theyd sleep, he'd grow.
And do the work the others left,
But never did he tell
That he was best among the rest,
But far behind he fell.
Others teased, and laughed at him,
Friends were hard to find.
Through the night he kept on working
To keep others out of bind.

Until the flood when waters came
And washed the hill to ground.
The ant proclaimed,
"There is a bridge, follow me" out loud.
So others swam behind "Little Cant",
And nightfall quickly came
And he began to GROW as they reached the bridge
The others had not seen.

And all the ants were saved
As they peered upon their mound.
Standing on the bridge
When they could have easily drowned.

"How'd you get so big? How'd you build this bridge?"
They asked, staring at the ant.

"My little insects," he said,
"You made me, when you told me that I cant."

My aunt with a heart so big,
Insisted I dance this jig.
To Zootoo I come,
Help her shelter some,
E'en though cats I do not dig...

Yes the cat dragged me in!
Got dogs: one fat, one thin.
Mocha's my girl,
Tessie's my pearl,
St. Tammany had better win!

Our craziness runs in our genes,
My niece and her aunt are the queens!
With words we do play
Our emotions to say
My gratitude bursts at the seams!

Our critters are big in our lives.
'Tis a family trait that survives.
Four paws we adore,
Cru-elty we abhore,
While love for our pets ever thrives.

It must run in the family
You guys are too talented for me
Glad you joined in
to help St. Tammany win
Keep voting each day and we'll see.

My insides are burning,
but my stomach is cold
Everything is churning
This is getting old!

I'm nervous and scared
Hyperventilating too!
Cause evrything's pared
Down to 10 with ZooToo!

Today is the day
What happens will be
3 hours to pray
In the top 10? We will see!

We awoke this morning to more snow (forecast is for 5" today) and Sunny has been singin' the blues:

I got the cold cat blues.
The Sunny Bubba blues.
I got the cold cat Sunny Bubba blues.

I wanna go outside.
I wanna leave my pride.
I need my space
But in the snow there ain't no place.

I got the cold cat Sunny Bubba Blues.

Just posted this on Richard's Journal. This is too much fun!

STHS is the best!
Of their quality and love I attest.
When my Bodhi was sick,
Their care did the trick,
With their kind open hearts we are blessed.

Its a parish so direly stressed.
By the hurricanes we've been depressed.
A strong shelter we need
To care for and feed
Furry friends who have been so oppressed.

To teach and support is our quest.
To find homes to provide a warm nest.
To make people aware
And to urge them to care
For the critters with which we are blessed.

This wonderful Zootoo contest,
Has helped us discover the best!
Through this venue of fun
We have already won!
As we look to our future with zest!

Zootoo has visited,
Will we win?
Right now I just hope
To be in the top 10!

Supporters and friends
came out in the crowd
When Richard arrived
It became quite loud!

With a smile on his face
and a shining demeanor
he spoke to the crowd
about the Zootoo fever!

The visit is done
we will see what will happen,
Thank you ZooToo staff
This has been a lot of fun!

I was so proud
to be part of the crowd
cheering the TopCat of ZooToo

I held up my sign
took an extra lunch time
and join the STHS crew

It was fun till then end
I met some new friends
and saw an old friend from Lakeview

The has been such fun
Can't wait till its won
But then I don't know what I'll do!

Ok, so this is not animal related, but since I am a member of The St. Tammany Humane Poets Society, I thought I would use this venue to publish a poem I wrote in high school that I really liked then and still do now. It is not deep, sad, funny, or otherwise important to the world.

Plink, plink, plink, plink,
Rain falls,
Hear the clink
Water hits the roof of tin
Plink, plink, plink, plink

Our poems are wonderful and so much fun!
Now I'm addicted and I won't be one
To stop writing verses about furry friends.
My goofy words will go on 'til my end.

My mother in law moved in yesterday
And I know she's here to stay
Alzheimers is rough,
The times can be tough
But the poodle on her arm
Keeps her calm

Phoebe is small
Three pounds, thats all
But the joy she brings
Means she's no little thing

To Dot and Phoebe
Welcome from me!

My 3 furry friends are alone.
I had to leave them at home.
My neighbor agreed
To check on their feed
While to Houston I had to roam.

I miss their attention and love.
Their soft fur I am thinking of.
Their insistant meows
For their tasty chow
And their antics and joy from above.

Well this isnt mine but I sing some of it every morning to wake my kids up and they hate it. So I will share. Hey, you gotta get them back in your own way right?

When the red, red robin comes bob, bob, bobbin' along.
There'll be no more sobbin' when he starts throbbin; his old, sweet song. Wake up, wake up, you sleepy head, get up, get up, get out of bed.
Cheer up, cheer up, the sun is red. Live, love, laugh and be happy. What if Ive been blue, now Im walkin through fields of flowers. Rain may glisten, but still Im listen for hours and hours. Im just a kid again, doin what I did again. Singin a song. When the red, red robin comes bob bob bobbin along.

Arnold and Snapper, you are my heart
My life was upended when you did depart
Snapper the goof, Arnold the galoot
Your deaths shook my soul right down to the root

Arnold the first greyhound in my life
When you died, it cut like a knife
The pain was sharp and very intense
As the days went on nothing made sense

Snapper the sunshine I adopted soon after
So shy and unsure, I was your protector
You came alive to the world
Your personality unfurled

We had 2 short years
before cancer caused tears
Now I have Piper and Pinni
My girls don't you see
I dread the day when they leave me

Stay'n out of a rut.
And our eyes ain't shut.

Hangin' in with all our friends.

Here's one for Piper Sue:

She brightens the place with her happy face
Just one kiss will never do

No one would keep her
Now she's my sofa sleeper
I love my Piper Sue

I used to be cold alot, especially when it would rain.
The wind would blow, and shelter was scarce,
I would shiver with fear and with pain.

I remember him clearly, his voice and his touch.
His smell I recall and I miss him quite much.
And I dont know what happened,
One day, they werent there.
It happened so quick and I know that they cared.
But I strolled to the house and the lights
They werent on.
The stuff in the yard, everything gone.
I scratched at the door just like I know
And they answer with glee and with that, they would show.
And my friend he would take me, Im not sure his name
But I knew that he loved me
For I felt just the same.

So I sat there alone at the steps for a while,
I saw the sun up and I saw the moon smile
And they never came back
So I left on my own
And I didnt know where
Cause that was my home.
And I wandered around for it seemed quite a bit
When an angel I think
Came and gave me a lift
And he took me with wheels to a place that was new
But I still felt alone and I still felt real blue.

When many days it seemed to pass
And people, strangers came to see
But never took me for a ride
Although I know they cared for me.

When summer winds blew through my snout
To find familiar scents
I knew the smell before..
The day before I went.
I looked to see my friend,
Standing at my cage.
The boy I drempt about was here
It looked as though he aged.
But still the touch, the voice was same
And came and took me home again.

Here's one for Gus who decided to stretch out across all three dog bed last night causing more civil unrest in the herd.

I crowned him a king
But it didn't mean a thing
It was only a costume for Mardi Paws

But it went to his head
Now he hogs everyone's bed
And created his own version of Pet Wars.

I adopted a sweet Siamese boy;
Brought him into my home with great joy.
His blue eyes are so bright,
And he's added such light,
He is charming, and curious, and coy!
