we lost a chicken yesturday

last night after dinner i was walking around the house and found one of the RI reds on the front lawn in distress. she was weak and had labored breathing. i didn't want to leave her there so i asked john to put her in the chicken coup.

when john picked her up elvis became very protective and was not far behind barking his objections to the handling of her. we put her in the coup and she just lay there. elvis seeing her on the ground was a bit confused and stood on her back, she then let out the strangest of cries, nothing like i have heard before. JLo came running over and she started pecking her face! elvis was m-a-d! he cleared the coup of all the chicks and stood vigil until the end. fortunately she didn't suffer for long.
