Waiting for the hunt to begin

This past weekend was The Genesis Awards here in Hollywood. It is The Humane Society of the United State’s evening to honor positive animal support in the media. It was my pleasure and my great honor to be on its Honorary Committee.
Before attending I went to look at their website to check out some information (HSUS.org) They temporarily replaced the usual home page with a page dedicated to stopping the Canadian seal hunt. My heart stopped when I saw in the top right corner a timer counting down the days, hours, and minutes to the beginning of the seal hunt. It read less than 12 hours.
My heart not only stopped, but it broke. And it is still breaking. It is virtually impossible for me to stop crying. Of course I understand the dynamics of capitalism and consumerism and the workings of the world in that way, but I really must say I don’t understand the brutal "clubbing" of over 250,000 baby seals - a lot of which will happen right in front of their mothers. I know it happens, and I know why - but it is still inconceivable to me. My body aches from the pain of sorrow.
I have signed petitions. I have sent letters. I have made donations. I have physically protested. I have wisely used the power of my dollar to the absolute best of my ability. I have invited others to join me in these efforts. And I will continue to do all of the above for as long as I am alive and need to. I’m not the only one, there are many many others who make even far bigger contributions, yet I sit here with a sickening, aching pit in my stomach that I am "helpless" to do anything about it at this very moment to save them. I sit here tonight, and in the morning they will perish. The thought is too much to bear and tonight my tears are endless, my prayers the deepest.
I pray for the seals. I pray for the defenders. I pray for the hunters. I pray for the ignorant. I pray for the thoughtless. I pray for the poor. I pray for the greedy. I pray for humankind.
The wheel of karma will not play favorites, nor will it be bought for a beautiful pelt. Ultimately I pray it’s justice is swift.
