Stray cat on our deck...

I mentioned on someone's journal that I had a stray cat coming to my back door every night, howling and getting Kittles in an uproar.

Well, I have been feeding the poor thing because I feel sorry for it and don't know if it has a home or not. It is so cold outside, I just feel so terrible that this cat is not inside where it's warm.

Until tonight, I had never seen this kitty. I knew it was there howling and by the time he heard me coming to the patio door, he would run. Obviously, I knew he was there throughout the day because all the food I put out is eaten.

I was sitting here about half an hour ago and I heard Kittles hissing. He was behind the patio door curtain. So, I picked up the camera and turned the light on. Natch, he stopped hissing...I pulled the curtain back and no cat was visible.

I opened the door and tried calling this stray kitty. I called a couple of times and heard this noise on the deck. I crouched down to look under the lawn table and there under one of the chairs was this beautiful short-haired gray cat. I softly called it and he ran out from under the chair and jumped off the side of the deck. It's tail appears to be black and gray striped but the body is all gray. It's eyes were yellow and looked like a bolt of lightning going acrossed the deck.

Hubby is so excited when I tell him that this kitty is eating the food I put out. If I am ever lucky enough to befriend this kitty, hubby and I will definitely be adopting it. I just hope I can earn its trust. It may be easier when spring comes because I sit out on the deck as much as possible.

I want so much to give this kitty a loving forever home. I know Kittles will be a little brat about it at first but I believe he will adapt. At least I hope so.

I have already decided on a name for this beautiful stray....Lightning. Yes, because I will never forget that gold bolt that went acrossed the deck. Lightning it will be!

What a pretty name. I think you need to immediately start ready all of Cully's old Oh Charlie journals. He did a great job of earning his trust. He sounds like he will be a great member to your family!

I hope so, Jen. I have already gotten a helpful hint from Cully. I built a cardboard house for Lightning and put some old towels in there along with a cat bed Kittles would not use. It does not appear that he slept in it last night but, he did eat the food I left. I will let everyone know what happens..

We had a stray female cat that came to our back patio window when she was pregnant, begging for food. My aunt started putting food out for her since she was so thin, and eventually she had her babies out in our yard. We trapped the kittens when they were weaned, and took them to the shelter, where I'm sure they were adopted. Then we trapped "Fuzzy" and had her fixed so she wouldn't have more kittens, and brought her back to our house. With a lot of food, time and patience she eventually found her way into the house and would let us pet her and she would curl up on the couch to sleep. She wouldn't stay in at night though. She stayed with us for about 3 years then disappeared one day. We miss her terribly. So there is hope that your stray will come around, he/she just needs time. Sounds like you have the right approach!

Thank you, Josy. I am sorry your stray never returned. I am hoping I can get Lightning to come join our family. If I do, it is going to be strictly indoors.

My prayers are really being answered! I keep * praying * that ppl will open their hearts and their homes to the strays :)

If everyone, saved one instead of throwing one out,we would have better stories to share :)

What a beautiful cat and gorgeous photo! The name Lightning is perfect for him. I hope he sticks around...it's so nice for you to feed him. You'll have to ask Cully for some tips to befriend a cat. Charlie bonded with him.

You are such a kind person. I think the cat will eventually warm up to you. It is just scared and unsure at this point. Think you have picked out a good name. I also think your other cat will be fine. There is plenty of love to go around. Bless you for being so caring.

I hope Lightening joins your family, but beware of a stormy welcome from your cats. You'll probably have to use all the tricks of introducing a new cat into the house when Lightening is ready to come in.

I know that for sure! I have it all planned out and Lightning will be vet checked and okayed. Then, he/she will have their own room for a bit. We will have to take it slow for Kittles' sake. Afterall, he's been our only cat for 7 1/2 years.

Oh, I must tell you the picture is not Lightning. It is a download. Lightning was way too quick for me to get a pic. Not to mention, it was not very light on the deck when I saw this kitty for the first time. I will try and get a picture of Lightning and if I do, I will post that for all to see. Thanks, Carol.

Kathy,
Thank you for helping this gray kitty. I think if you continue to put food out even when you are sitting on your deck, kitty will learn to trust you enough to get close for a petting. Gradually Lightening will become your kitty. It may take 6 months to a year, but it will be worth the effort.

Judy, I am here for Lightning. Whenever he/she decides is fine with me. I do think it will be easier in the warmer months. Right now, it is too blasted cold for me to sit on the deck. Is spring ever going to come?

Get him on a regular feeding schedule so when it comes time to trap him it will be easier. Try sitting at a distance while he eats. Slowly move forward a little bit but not so close he wont eat. Try talking to him too. Get him used to your presence. After you trap, test, neuter and vaccinate him he will probably want to stay in a quiet room by himself. Don' t feel bad if he doesn't warm up to you right away. Give him places to hide and spend a little quite time just being in the same room with him. Eventually he will come and check you out and maybe allow you to pet him. If he is feral it will be a slow one but he will love you like crazy.

Someone pointed out that the stray may be carrying fleas, etc, so I'll share my experience with strays. Two of my four babies came to me as strays. The last one wasn't supposed to stay, but somehow she never made it to the shelter. :) When we brought her in after my son caught her, I was very concerned about what she might be exposing my 17 year old cat to. So, when I brought her in to the house, I put her into my medium sized cat carrier (the mostly enclosed tan plastic kind with the bars on the front) with food, water, etc. I kept her in the bathroom away from the other cats until I had a chance to get her to the vet. That way she had her own quiet space, probably felt safer because she was in an enclosed space, and my other cats were protected from anything she might be carrying. I did allow my cats to get a look-see at her from a few feet, but keeping them from hissing and possible scratching ensured that they wouldn't transfer anything nasty.

I am so excited for you--good luck and catching your new friend!

Thanks a bunch, Rose. I certainly am excited about how this will play out. It is my thought that this kitty might be getting a little less afraid of me. Afterall, it was always gone by the time I even reached the patio door before. Perhaps, it was curious to meet me too. I hope that there are more frequent meetings. I will keep everyone posted.

I have no doubt that this kitty will learn to trust you in no time. It just takes time & patience. It seems like forever with no progress & then all of the sudden they're sniffing your hand & then they're in your house! Get him/her a warm cozy box too. We have various insulated boxes we've either built or constructed out of two sizes of Rubbermaid containers. Good luck!

That's the way to do it when you have the luxury of letting them call the shots. They'll tell you how much interaction they're ready for. My OJ lived in our garage for a long time, entering & exiting thru the pet door, but he never let us get close to him. Finally one day Brent managed to reach out & touch his side as he ran out. I guess he liked it because by the time I went out a little later he was sitting there looking at me & he let me pet him.

I've done a lot of trapping, and if I am not having success, a good plan is to put the food(it can be dry) in the live trap and tie it open, so Lightning will get used to going in there to eat the food, safe in the notion she can leave again. Then, when the food has consistently disappeared for a brief period of time-take the tie off and Lightning's now yours-good luck

Your new friend sounds like a very attractive cat!...not to mention fast! You could get a jump start on taming him if you knew someone who had a live trap. A little tuna fish, cover the trap with towels except for the opening...and you would probably have him the next day. A trip to the vet for spay/neuter/shots and of course a test for feline leukemia...and you would have yourself a new member of the family. This is the procedure I have used on dozens of stray cats, many of which still reside with me and my wife. It is so rewarding to see them get a new life indoors.

My hubby and I have talked about what we would need to do before bringing this cat into our home. I would definitely do all of what you said and also get it all the necessary shots and bathed and treated for fleas as well. We have never had to contend with fleas with our Kittles and I certainly would never want to. They get into the carpets and everything. I may try putting a can of tuna out during the warmer weather. Right now, it is so blasted cold, it would freeze and I don't want to give this little kitty a bellyache. I only feed him dry food right now because after having to throw away 2 cans because they froze, I figured it was a waste of money. However, he has always been able to eat the dry food. Thanks Kevin. I will definitely let everyone know what happens next.

Good luck!....oh and one thing to remember, even if your new friend seems tame kind of tame when he is outside, be careful of him when you get him confined in a live trap. They get scared and even though they don't really mean any harm, their personality can change because they are trying to defend themselves. So just be careful to not put your fingers in to try and pet him or anything until he has seen the vet. Good idea on the fleas...often times stray cats have worms and earmites also which are for the most part easily treated.

I will throw it in the dryer with a dryer sheet before I put it out. I have some of that catnip spray I could use if I need to. I would rather try it naturally first, though.

One of our fellow zootooers made a makeshift home out of several cardboard boxes (good insulator) for the strays that frequented her yard. You might try something like that while you are waiting for the weather to break.

Make it in layers if you can. Put little boxes inside of bigger ones. You can have a swinging door by cutting in three places but not cutting the top edge - understand?

If you have those little kitchen throw rugs you can put them under and over the box which makes a very warm nest. MomCat had Jinx, Cody & Cricket in such a box at this time of year and every time I opened it to look at them it was hot in there..... even tho Mom cat was off running around.
