So So Nervous...

I got a very big surprise this morning. I was going on my morning run around to look at everything and make sure everything is okay. I believe that in the loss of one you will gain another. Well in the tragic loss of Luna we got our beautiful rat Nymh. And now with our tragic loss of William, Knox and Tilula might be having a baby. I looked in their cage and noticed something weird in their food dish. Well I looked closer and it was an egg. They laid an egg!!! This is my first bird egg! I am so excited yet very very nervous over the whole ordeal.

How exciting! Our lovebird we had a few years ago laid 4 eggs, but they were all infertile, because there was no male. It was still cool though!

I didn't think that they would start laying eggs until spring so i didn't put a nest in yet so she laid it in the food bowl. after i noticed it i made a nest right away. i'm not sure if it is fertile yet i don't want to touch it much so they don't abandon it. I will keep everyone updated.

What a surprise! Zootoo has some pretty experienced bird-people that surely have good advice and ideas…
I doubt that Daryl would mind if you picked her birdbrain. ; )

Congrats! The first egg is always exciting. You might want to check and see whether it's fertile, though--don't want to get your hopes up if it isn't. Daryl's right, too--they'll need a nice, comfy, warm nest. :-)

ths one i can't answer because my skeets were never fertile. there was no male. if you saw them do it then you have a good chance. i lent someone my tiel book so i can't even tell you how long they should take to hatch. my best peice of advice is to google it. i haven't dealt with a female in 16 years. after my experiencei keep males. but they are like chicken they don't need a rooster. a good one to brain pick is dr. geof. he is a specialist

To tell whether it's a fertilized egg, you "candle" it--basically this just means that you hold up the egg to a strong light so you can see what's inside. Here's a good article about the process:www.geocities.com

I've never had to take the parents elsewhere or do anything but simply remove the egg (briefly) and check it, then return it. Mind you, this is for finches, though! And just remember to be gentle when handling the egg. If it's fertile and you want a chick to hatch, just put it back and let the birds take care of it. Good luck!

Sorry--ZooToo seems to love converting web addresses into something else! If that link doesn't work, try this: <www.geocities.com>

And if THAT doesn't work, just Google "candling eggs" and click on the second link in the results.

better give her something to make a nest from so even if they sit on it it will be warm . my skeet would lay sometimes 7 eggs at a time ever other day apart

i helped and gave her stuff for a nest. i am so scared i don't know what to do...i have never had a baby bird before, are their any tips that you can give me? i have been reading stuff all day but it is easier to get a point a few from someone who has been there and already done it.

well if they are good parents they will do the job. you jus have to make sure the parents are getting everything they need. when there eyes open make sure they get used to seeing you and in and out of the cage helps to get them tame. but not too much diruption tll they get older. ask dr geof

Congratulations! Maybe you'll get to hand out cigars (don't smoke them though!). When I had finches many, many years ago they loved to lay eggs (such cute tiny eggs) but they never hatched. hopefully you'll be reading up on all the things you need to do to help the parents. I only have a single male parrotlet for a reason--he prefers it that way as he is a real "chicken hawk"-LOL! Please keep us posted!
