Disgusted with Dishonorable Competition

Hey ZooToo-ers,

Ok, so it's no secret that there is this competition for a shelter makeover going around. It's no secret that competition is fierce. But for goodness' sake, compete fairly. Recruit people, comment, review, write and post pictures and video. I'm absolutely disgusted by the fact that there have been people going around and flagging posts (maybe this'll get flagged too) and reviews as inappropriate because they want other shelters to lose. If it is a legitimate review, leave it alone.

Presumably, you joined ZooToo because you love animals and want all pets to be taken care of. When you start trying to attack other groups, do you think that helps the community at all? I really don't see how under any system of ethics, this kind of action could be justified. The effect is to steal from underprivileged organizations. Instead, why don't you try and earn your points and let the competition work itself out?

You know when I saw the option to flag this comment, it never occurred to me to do this. I didn't see any reason to do that. I guess I am too naive to use that option to mess up anyone's point. I would be a terrible politician, don't know how to fight dirty.

Serena-I am so heartsick over this unfair contest--I would like to know what happened. I will csll and see what I can find out

i noticed that early on here.... so i keept a log of what i wrote and how many points i had when i signed out. if anything came up missing i just reposted it. i got fed up with it and contacted zootoo, and they were able to see that a few people went around and flaged for the fun of it.. yeap pritty sad.
now i have to admit that i have flagged a few myself BUT for good reason. once i was writeing about a sweater daisy likes and there was a girl on there that posted - " dog's have furr dont out cloth on them" i flaged it because this is her personal opinion not a review about the product, and when i looked at ther profile that is all she ever had wrote on any of her reviews about most pet cloth, so i contacted zootoo directly. the other was my favorit... 2 people from MN posted on all the breeders the same word's, it was always the same sentince... and they posted this about at 50 diffrent breeders.... no place for that under review of a product or a service...

You are a smart lady, I had noticed early on one day some points were missing, and since I didn't keep a log like you. I was at a loss truly. I tried to repost some things. I honestly thought since I had been having some computer problems that the submissions didn't go through somehow. No I am more aware of this flag this comment game. Thanks for the info.

I flagged many a review because it was obvious they had never used or experienced the product, many that were purely a sounding board for their personal beleifs on a product and some that were just ridiculous because they were not "pet" products at all. All of them I found while looking to review my own products. I found it infuriating to see that people were not reviewing products honestly. It not only effects points, but more importantly the manufacturers of those products and the people reading the reviews to see if it is right for their pet. I agree with another poster that it became apparent that you had to read the reviews to get the true picture of the worth of a product.

I noticed you mentioned two people from Minnesota who posted the same review on 50 breeders. How about the OVER 40 members from the same shelter in Michigan who posted the same review over 1,000 times on many different breeders? Or the multiple users (also from the same shelter in Michigan) who posted the same review on leather anything, IAMS, Petco, AKC, etc., again and again? Not that any of these were reviews--all were "statements."

I have a question - I'm pretty new to all of this, but in reading a lot of reviews lately - I have noticed that some people have written comments about loving a product, dog loves it, they love it, and when listing pros they have nothing but good things, and have nothing listed under cons, but then they give the product a 1! What's that about? Shouldn't these people's reviews be corrected, or flagged, because their review is essentially hurting the product?

After reading and completing a lot of reviews, I can offer up some answers. The biggest problem is that the default rating is set to one. So if you forget to rate the product, the system is set up to automatically give it a one instead of a five. It seems wrong to set it up on the negative side, but that's the way it is. Secondly, if you have a Mac, none of the browsers (Safari, Firefox, Camino, Opera) will be able to perform all the functions on zootoo. In fact, not all options even show up. Thirdly, there seems to be a fluke in the system where if you simply run the mouse up or down the screen, your selected rating of five will magically deteriorate to one. Fourthly, the only way you can correct the wrong rating is to contact customer support who will delete your review altogether so you can start anew. Everyone who's been on zootoo for a while knows to ignore the ratings and just read the actual reviews. ;-)

these are the biggest complaints i have about the zootoo site. i find it extremely difficult to navigate. also, VERY frustrating to have to go page, by page, by page to search..some sites list at the bottom"pg1, 2, 3, etc." to allow you to choose which page you want to open. also, on "search", putting quotes around a search word doesn't work.(i.e "vets/tucson,az") you still end up with numerous unwanted options.

Thanks for the information - good to know. I have also noticed a glitch that bothers me. When I am browsing through pages, and I'm on page 12 of 20, and I hit the back button, it sends me all the way back to page 1! UGH! Frustrating! I have learned to start opening a new window whenever I want to read anything that's a link that would require me to go back to a previous page. Sounds like zootoo needs to work on some of the technical aspects of their site and make it a bit more user friendly.

Hi Angie,

You have to use the internal page browser (next page OR previous page). If you use your actual internet browser then it takes you back to the last page in your history. This happens because the internal page browser loads in its own frame (like a picture frame). That way, the whole page doesn't have to load just to switch pages.

I have faced the same problem! I am not good on the computer so I would waste alot of time on here trying to get back to were I was. I don't have that kind of time, but it is an addiction some days. LOL

There are two different solutions to your problem. First of all, you need to remember to hit the "previous" button on the web page instead of the browser's "back" button. Secondly, it used to be that if you were on page 12 and wanted to read a particular review, you just had to make sure your page had been "refreshed" to page 12. You could then read the review, comment on it, and hit your "back" button to go back to page 12. That's no longer the case; sometimes you'll end up on page 1, 8 or 10, no matter how many times you refreshed page 12! However, I have found that Firefox will still keep you on page 12. Does that make sense? You're right; it is a bit of a mess.

I agree, flagging for the sole purpose of taking points away from a competitor is downright WRONG! I had several of my news comments removed, and I remember exactly what I wrote, nothing inappropriate or offensive. I have flagged other people's news comments when I think that they are hateful and borderline violent (we've all seen those), and those 1-word comments, in my books, are nothing more than cheating. However, you'll probably find this funny, but I flagged *myself* on 2 occasions when Zootoo had a glitch in its system and kept reposting my previous comment when, in fact, I had typed in new ones!

I thought that flagged reviews were checked out by Zootoo staff. . . I didn't think they were removed without regard.

I have never flagged anothers ! I have worked very hard for my shelter and have done it on the up & up....
I'm positive there more people who, like me who did it honestly than the wrongful ones!

We have been dismayed by some of the reviews that seemingly "pass", while our review of our own shelter is repeatedly being deleted. We just don't get it. Win or lose, we would just like someone to explain what is going on with that.

I would have thought anyone interested in this contest wants to help ALL animals.Posting fake reviews is hurtful and could be dangerous.

I remain hopeful that this contest will be conducted fairly by the people at Zootoo, as they look in to some of these posts.

And to those who were flagging posts just to get ahead and hurt another shelter....Shame, shame on you.

Thank you all for commenting here and for the original post. This was something that really unnerved me anyhow - fake reviews that could potentially be dangerous to a pet. I actually have found a few things on here that I read the reviews and really want to try - now I think "well, maybe those reviews are lies?"....
Anyhow, I have played the flagging game BUT I only flagged things that really weren't reviews and even zootoo has said they won't take those one word things. My reviews have been thought through, and I have taken a lot of time searching for the products that I use on the lists. When those got dumped I was hurt but I kept going. WHen my daughter took time to review and support the people we really care for and want to help, spent her evening taking photos of the dog for us and the cat and all that stuff...... and she got her reviews removed, she cried. She had put her heart into it. Now she says that it's no use. Thanks to those who showed my 12 year old the cold hard truth (people are out to do stuff for themselves most of the time) about life.... NOT!

Pennie you are so right about the fake reviews. I have seen some that are dangerous especially those that relate to rabbit food. Some of those reviews that say postive things about the nut and seed treats could have lots of rabbits going into GI stasis. I do not find those funny.

Funny is the woman who wrote that Fiesta bunny food is great to sprinkle on dog and cat food as a nutritional supplement... is she stupid? Lazy? Drunk or on drugs? I don't know but nothing she has written appears to be a legitimate review.

After all 5 star reviews for a certain brand of canned cat food, I bought some Saturday - small cans 89 cents each which is expensive. Not a one of my 16 cats cats would touch the stuff. So much for the 5 star reviews. I would like to meet the cats that eat this stuff and observe.

At this point, if it comes from someone I don't know, I am not believing it.

I agree i started to get caught up on flagging but I stopped. Some people flag due to spelling or other silly stuff. Let it be and let Zoo Too decide whats good and bad.....but that is another story in itself so I WON'T GO THERE. I JUST HOPE ZOO TOO HELPS ALOT OF ANIMALS.

I agree. I had to work the points I earned - just like everyone else. I would never call a review into question - regardless what it said. That "tattle-tale" mentality has not place in adult society. My name is worth more than a million dollars...and the behavior you describe is casts a dark blot on the character of anyone who displays it.

Competition is competition, but should always be conducted in a sporting manner. If anyone does anything simply to subtract from any other shelter's points, they should be kicked off zootoo. Every one of us are hopefully here for all the right reasons and will ultimately support the winning shelter(s). Anything less takes away from the very animals we are trying to aide.

I agree there is a bad smell, a miasma of stink, hovering over this entire process.
As far as flagging, I am too busy trying to gain points at the moment.

What would you do about this: reviews of Sullivan's Sheep blankets -go take a look and see how many peole have reviewed them as 'dog beds'. This is absurd. For the love of Pete, they are blankets for show sheep and bear no relation to dog beds. Obviously the only acquaintence these folks have with the item is seeing it on Zootoo.

It's funny in a mild way and it is also cheating. If you have lived your life in a concrete jungle, do not review farm products. People who do are looking more and more like jack*sses or the hind end of a jack*ss.

Or reviews of tail bags for horses as being 'tail warmers'. I laughed so hard I almost fell of the chair. For gosh sakes, if you know nothing about horses, do not review horse products.

I won't even get into mane braid bands.... No there are no rastah horse you dopes.

This type of blatant lying, while it may provide a laugh, is disgusting. It's just palin cheating and not in the least amusing to those who do it right.

But again, I am trying to get as many legitimate points as possible and praying ZT does not take points for products I use everyday.

If the flagging is genuinely felt, that is one thing. If it is done deliberately to beat out a competitor, it has no place in the contest. We are all animal lovers and need to respect each other and each other's animals.

i agree the competition should be fair and no bashing as that doesnt help anyone especially the animals

Thanks for pointing this out, and I'm sorry to hear this. I wonder, today, and just for today hopefully, how many pets won't get their usual attention and love because so many of us are putting in the final competition hours at our computers. My shepherd is currently waiting, patiently, for me to come outdoors and scout around.

Yeah, me too. My cats have given up waiting for me and are all sleeping in other rooms.

Sorry to hear about this; I agree, too, that the site with the most points ought to win, if for no other reason than to avoid ANY possible comments of "unfair." I do have to admit, though, that in my fervor to get points for my "team", I seriously considered naming all of my pond fish and training them to vote.

Hear hear.

What really bothers me is where Zootoo says "Makeover winner will be chosen by Zootoo Advisory Panel". In other words, the shelter with the most points might not necessarily win the makeover? That really doesn't seem fair. People are working really hard to legitimately get points for their favorite shelters. Shouldn't their hard work be legitimately rewarded?

I hope I'm wrong about this. But why else would they say it? The shelter I'm supporting isn't number one in the standings, but regardless, I hope that those folks who have worked so hard to rack up all those points to get to number 1 get the makeover reward that they have earned. Fairness all around, please!

So far it seems that the people at ZooToo are doing their best to keep the bad behavior down to a minimum. I know that a colleague of mine flagged a particulary nasty review of our shelter (which happened to be untrue) and it was quickly removed. Good luck to all!

I'm sad that these types of contests do seem to being out the worst in some folks. Let's play fair and congrats to all that win (I'm hoping my shelter is amongst them).

Good luck to all of the shelters who are competing for this generous prize....it should be done fairly.

No flag here. I'm really sorry to hear that sort of thing is going on. I did join to help a friend's rescue, and I hope it wins.... but I agree we should all play fairly.

This is a wonderful oppotunity to make a significant difference in the lives of the many homeless animals that come to us for shelter and the hope of being adopted into a loving, caring new home, and shame on those who feel they must cheat to try to win. All of our shelters need this kind of help, don't ruin it by trying to win by trashing others. Cheaters should be disqualified.
