A Prayer for the Animals, attributed to Albert Schweitzer
2 comments
I came across this prayer in my friend's home and was surprised to find that Albert Schweitzer was related to the woman, Emily Schweitzer, whose property has become a forest preserve. Emily Schweitzer had a copy of this hanging in her house. I visit the Schweitzer Woods preserve frequently with my dogs and I am always overcome with the reverence and spirit of her land.
Hear our humble prayer, O God, for our friends the animals,
especially for animals who are suffering;
for animals that are overworked, underfed and cruelly treated;
for all wistful creatures in captivity that beat their wings against bars;
for any that are hunted or lost or deserted or frightened or hungry;
for all that must be put death.
We entreat for them all Thy mercy and pity,
and for those who deal with them we ask a heart of compassion
and gentle hands and kindly words.
Make us, ourselves, to be true friends to animals,
and so to share the blessings of the merciful.

Reply I agree wholeheartedly! There's a place for purebred dogs in this world. There are people who WANT the purebred dogs and take good care of them. Sure there are lots of wonderful rescued mutts also needing homes-- but why are rescuers trying to shove them down our throats?
We do because of the prayer you noted here. "...for all that must be put to death."
