We adopted Maya from a local pet store in April of 2005. She was the cute puppy in the window. We almost acted on impulse the moment we first saw her, but since we had a 2 year old and a baby (ended up being babies-twins!) on the way we decided we had better research the breed. Maya is a Bernese Mountain Dog. We liked everything we read about the breed, especially their temperment. There were a couple things we didn't like such as the many things that go along with her large size, and the fact that this breed has a shorter life span than some dogs. We weighed the pros and cons and decided that she would be a good fit for our growing family.
And she is. She now weighs 109 pounds and is a great dog! Unfortunately she was diagnosed with hip dysplasia last year. So far it has been manageable for her.
She is a super smart dog that, like most dogs, love attention. She is great with the kids. She doesn't have an aggressive drop in her body. She doesn't know a stranger.
