Bad Rap

I must say I am still so surprised how people react to a pit bull. Mine is the best. Any dog can be mean and agressive its how they are raised. People just amaze me.

I had a doberman in the 80's when doberman's weren't cool. I remember walking her down the main street of a New England town. I also remember being stopped by a policeman and being asked to leave the main street with my dog. She was a family dog and wouldn't have hurt anyone but because she was a "doberman" that meant something bad!

My grandmother is one of those who doesn't think pit bulls should exist. Personally, I'm a big believer in that if you love an animal and treat it with respect, most times it will treat you the same.

I've never owned a pit bull, and I'll admit I used to be nervous around them because all I knew was the image and the headlines- the neighborhood I worked in was swarming with these "gangsta wannabe's" and of course they all had their pit bulls. But through visiting the shelter over the past few years and meeting some pits face to face, thankfully I think I've become enlightened! Now they hold a special place in my heart.

I felt the same way you did about pitbulls (being nervous around them) and i have never owned one. Every now and then we see one roaming the neighborhood and my husband was even chased by one but i do agree that it is all in the way they are raised. I see a lot of them at the animals shelters in San Diego and i fear they will be "adopted" and used for fighting. There is one right now at my local shelter and she seems real sweet, licking my hand and wagging her tail. I wish someone will adopt her when she is available. I have 4 dogs and I will be moving so i can't right now but i wish i could take so many more. I don't think pits should be banned and i do think people need to be educated about pits and every animal.

You can blame it on irresponsible owners.

You are so right. I have 2 of the most sweetest pits around. They are 1 of the best dogs I ever had(also a really good Lab) Please give ur babies a big hug from another pitbull lover!!!!!

I've had pits even before all the hype. The last two became registered therapy dogs through Therapy Dogs International. I thought it might be a great way for people to get to know about the breed and see how wonderful they can be. All my pits are rescues. We just got 2 more from the city shelter. They're now 8 months old and are being trained for therapy work. It's a lot of fun for me and my dogs.
