Aggressive dogs

Around the nation as many know, there has been a widespread effort to "outbreed" pitbull dogs, due to their violent reputation. Am I the only one who thinks this is idiotic beyond belief? Restricting dogs in certain areas may be a better idea, but complete elimination is always wrong. Why haven't we destroyed every mosquito, fly, cockroach, etc.? Because in one way or another, they are useful. So are pitbulls. The species has done nothing wrong, it is the humans. We are the problem. If we eliminated this breed because of dogfighting, they would only find another breed to fight, chiuhuahua's, german shepards, huskies, man knows no end to his cruelty. So if we are out to destroy an innocent species that is corrupted by our aggression rather then their own, I say why not destory the human species and eliminate the problem?

What really upsets me is the only news stories you hear of are about a pit bull attacking somebody or another animal. This only puts more fear in those who are non-educated on the pit bull breed. Also the only example used for a strong-willed, take no prisoners person is a "pit bull". One start would be to remove this breeds name from television shows, movies, etc.

I agree too. I have a pit and his so sweet and non agressive. If you look at dog bit statistics. LABS are the most likely to bite your child. In 2005, when I did this study, 1.89% of recorded dog bites were pits and 74% were labs and lab mixes and the remainder was other small dogs. Look at the facts people, not the news where they just need a sound bite, not the truth. Did you ever realize when they show a "pit attack" they rarely show a picture of the dog??? In 90% of the stories shown, it's not a pitbull at all. www.understand-a-bull.com is a fantastic resource for information and mistaken dog identiy. Check it out. They even have a fun game called find the pitbull. It gives you 24 dogs and you have to find the pit.

I also agree 100% remember when the Dobie was the BAD dog? Or the Rot? Its a matter of how there raised! Granted there are some that ARE bad like some children born this way! Called a BAD SEED. Don't judge a dog by its breed.

I agree 100% with all of you. I used to see how bad pit bulls were when they fought and thought that they must be one of the worst breeds you could get... yet now... I know that it is the people not the dogs. (I learned a long time ago.) I have to convince my friends that dogs only do what their owners tell them to do. If they do that is means 2 things: 1) pit bulls are actually very well trained if fight when their owners say to 2) the owners have to be training them to fight because, who wants to get themselves beat up? Not me and not any dog that I know of!

Love the final point you make - Fantastic!

I have to agree with the majority of comments, it's the people, not the pit! When I was a child, German Shepherds were the breed with the worst reputation, then came the Boxers. What breed will be chosen next? P.S. I have had very close association with all of the above breeds, and all have been terrific with my children.

I own a pit bull and I agree with you 100%. We (man) make a dog mean/aggressive. ANY dog can be made aggressive, it depends on how they are raised and trained when they are young. Any large breed dog, is a powerful creature, pits because of their powerful jaws, a rotti because of massive body strength, shepherds...size and intelligence. No breed of dog should be singled out and labeled as "bad" because of man's limitations.

The breed is not naturally vicous towards people they have to be mistreated or trained to be so. They are naturally aggressive towards other animals though and owners need to be sure to keep them under control even if they are great with their other animals. Its wrong to condemn the breed because of bad people. It wasn't long ago that German Shephards and Dobermans got the same bad rap. Some idiots get the idea to fight them or use them as guard dogs for the drug houses and everyone turns on the breed. Eliminate the people not the animals

I have owned a pit bull for the last 9 years. Presently I have 3 pit bulls. Jack, Petunia and Meg. I find that the dogs are very human friendly. I never worry about them around people. Sometimes they may get excited and jump up on people.

I do have to watch them around other animals. They will all kill cats, squirrels, rabbits and wild birds. Concerning other dogs I also watch them. Most of the time they are well behaved but I have seen a pit bull get mad and fight and I know that the other dog (unless a big dog) has very little chance.

I love the pit bull breed. I was talking to a trainer last weekend (who also like pitties) we agreed strong , smart and determined describes a pit bull.

Two weeks ago Jack and Petunia were both going after the same mole. Petunia snapped Jack and Jack beat her up really badly.. I do not consider Jack a bad dog or a killer. He was hunting and both dogs were very excited. When he got snapped by Petunia he took all his energy out on her. Presently they are good friends.

My husband is a vet. When he first started out he used to work at a local emergency clinic. He would see pittbulls come in late at night and he would stitch them without so much as a local, all the while they would lick his face. His comment to me and I totally agree, it is not the dog, it is the person who handles the dog. Know your breed, know it's tendencies and work with it.

We have three pits and my son has one. We have a cabin with a lot of space. People often come to camp there with their dogs and kids. It's not unusual for the dogs to outnumber the humans. We once had 6 pits, a rott , a great dane, labs and a bulldog puppy and a Shepherd. The only one who caused a problem was the shepherd. He bit the puppy and then went after another dog. My pit Ammo broke it up by charging inbetween the 2 dogs without biting ( we call her the anti-fighting pit) anyone. She got bit by the shepherd. Should we now ban all shepherds from our land? Of course not. He just needed some training in How to get along with others. People just need to be educated. Ceasar Milan is a great advacate for all the powerful breeds. He has many great pits and rotts in his pack. We just need more responsible owners. Pit owners everywhere need to make sure their dogs are trained and maybe do something possitive like making them therapy dogs. I have three of those and it has made a difference in how some people perceive them.
