When the dog is experiencing competing motivations, the behavior displayed will depend upon which motivation is stronger at that time. Learning and motivation go hand in hand. Problems:

· Novice handler and green dog
· Experienced dog and novice handler
· Lack of understanding
· Training – too fast and skipping steps
· Lures and prompts not faded quickly
· Dog has made too many errors during acquisition/learning stage
· Criteria not black and white to dog – rewarded attempts
