Litter Box Training
Twinkie is a 5 year old Abbie I've had since she was about 6 weeks old. She was part of a litter that was born shortly after her mother came to the rescue where I volunteer. She is sweet and quiet (no wheeking) and rattles the bars of her cage for attention.
I've had some guinea pigs that are neater than others. Twinkie's cage has never been particularly tidy, so I was surprised to see what happened when I offered her a litter box.
A week ago I placed this triangle shaped, plastic litter box neatly in one of the corners of her cage. She IMMEDIATELY went over there and sniffed, chewed on and licked it all over. She paced back and forth around it and stuck her nose in the bedding I placed in it. But she didn't go in it. I figured I'd leave her alone and let her decide whether she liked it or not.
Well, boy, did she ever like it. She sits, sleeps and eats in there. And as a result, it's turned into a litterbox, not because she goes over to it when she needs to go to the bathroom, but because she never wants to leave it, even for a minute. I have to lift her out to take it out to clean it and put in some fresh newspaper and bedding. But, it's made cage cleaning easier and I don't have to change all the bedding as often. I may even try it with some of my others.
