I was worried about Curly Fry

It's only been one day since Truffles has been gone but it's amazing what an impact her absence has on the rest of my herd. It's been quiet....REALLY QUIET..... very few wheeks or demands for food or any commotion whatsoever. They know something is different....

When Oreo passed, I had him out of his cage so Curly never knew what happened to him. I remember how she kept looking around in the cage and sat, facing the corner. She looked lost and seemed depressed. She missed Oreo. I didn't want her to go through that again.

I brought Truffles home to bury her and decided to let Curly say her goodbyes. Truffles was wrapped in a blanket so I just laid it next to Curly. She sniffed it and started to climb all over it, looking for Truffles. I decided to open up the blanket and let her see her. Curly sniffed her and then started licking her feet. She stopped and backed away and lifted her head really high up for a few seconds and started sniffing up in the air. Then, she backed away. .....she knew......

When I put Curly back in her cage, she just napped. I put Good Two Shoes in there for awhile and it was just the thing to get Curly up and moving. She purred at Goody for awhile, chased her, sniffed her and then went back to her nap. I eventually put Goody back with Puzzle......

I think Curly's going to be just fine.....

I have been off for a bit and am just finding out about Truffles. I am so sorry to hear that she has passed on, gosh it seems like this has been a really tough year. I think you did the right thing for Curly Fry. That way she knows what happened and doesn't think Truffles abandoned her or is lost. She was a good friend to Truffles and I am glad they had each other. I hope you are doing ok

Thank you, Alice. It always takes some time for everyone to regroup when we lose one. It's very quiet. Curly is much friendlier with us now that she's alone in her cage. I think she's bored.

I'm sure they are all upset by the loss. Have you let them out for a play day?

Oh, NO!!
I am so sorry to read about Truffles passing. This is terrible news.
Even when you know it is the best thing to do, making that decision is SO hard. Cully is right (once again)... you ARE a good Mom.
Give my love to Curly Fry.

Thanks, M, It's been a rough year here after losing three of them. You always expect the seniors to cross the bridge, but not the youngsters. Truffles just deteriorated rapidly. Once I heard her whimpering and she refused to eat, I knew she was suffering and I couldn't bear to see her like that.

Still thinking about you and the piggys and wishing you all the best. Glad Curly had some company. A little alone time is good, but it is also nice to have friends. Take Care :)

So sorry about Truffles, Kavy. I know you were hoping that she would be able to recover better, but she tried her best and was good company to Curly. Hope Curly does ok, I know she will be sad without her friend:(

I can tell Curly misses her but she's eating and drinking so I know she'll be fine. It's just really quiet here.

When we lost Missy Girl we only had Max at that time... Missy just went outside to her house as she liked to call it... lay down on the carpet of her kennel and we found her a few hours later.

It was not out of the ordinary for Missy to go out early and go inside her house, she loved it in there... a big kennel, lots of carpet and a doghouse to keep warm.. She must have wanted to be alone to pass and spare us seeing her go.

Later that day Max when out looking for Missy, he went out to her house and smelled all around, Max left and never went inside again..

Animals do know when something is wrong....

Carol, I know you're right. Curly isn't as agitated as when Oreo died; probably because she didn't know where he went. I have noticed that Curly is drinking a lot more and pacing, so she is still a bit out of sorts. I think she'll come through it okay, though.

I do think that animals need to say their "goodbyes" just like people do. So glad the herd is doing ok after loosing Truffles.

Lynn, they're all fine, but still really quiet. I think they probably all knew that Truffles was in distress. It's just back to an every day routine for all of them now.

Pets do morn after the loss of a playmate. Snoggle LOVES canned food but left it rotting in the bowl after her housemate Bogger died. She had been caring for the older cat like CF was trying to do and I think that is why Bogger lasted as long as she did. It took a little while but time (and pure greed) got her back to gobbling up the food. I will miss little T and hope that CF fills the empty space that losing her has made

I guess it just takes time. I'm sure they were better off having had those strong attachments than if they had been alone. We never replace any of those we lose, but we always have the memories.

It is so hard sometimes to know the best thing to do. I think you did the right thing for Curly. I think she will be fine too. Give them all a hug from my girls.

Thanks, Lourie, I think I have a quiet herd now. Even Rigatoni has quieted down. I realize now that Truffles was the wheek-leader.

Poor little Curly has been through a lot. I'm glad she got to say her goodbyes & get some closure. I think it really will help her adjust. You did a good thing for both of them.

When guinea pigs die from old age and not an affliction, they slow down and eventually refuse to eat. I try and feed them and offer water with a syringe. When they refuse, I offer them a quiet spot to curl up and die. They tell me what they need. In this case, I knew she was dying, but she was in pain and had sores from rubbing against the bedding. I couldn't lay her any other way to keep her off those sores. I hated making that decision, but she was in distress and I couldn't bear to see her like that. I think of her posing for photos in December and how quickly this progressed. It's so sad.

Curly knew something was really wrong with Truffles. At first she would try and really clean her up and seemed to be making herself sick. I switched to Carefresh and ecobedding in that cage so Truffles would be cleaner and it helped do that and cushion her better. I think Curly understood. She's much quieter now; probably just getting her strength back. She doesn't even run to get her snacks. She just walks over and takes them now.

I find it very interesting to watch animal behavior. I'm convinced that they show compassion and empathy towards those they "love." I think we humans can learn a lot from them. I think I grieve so much when I lose them because they're just so innocent.... almost like babies....

Thanks, Kaytee, I know you understand how I feel. I still think about you and Peyton. We've had a bad year on here, haven't we? I don't think I've ever lost three guinea pigs in one year. It worries me as I see mine get older and I know their time is limited. Truffles was just a little one, though; way too young to die. That's what's so heartbreaking to me.

I still look everyday for Peyton. Someone in my area on Craigslist, just found their dog after a whole month. So I do not give up the search. It has been a rough year here on Zootoo for alot of us.

Kaytee, I really think a good Samaritan found Peyton and took her in. She reminds me of Truffles in that they both had leg problems and never complained about it. I think we have to look at it like we gave them comfort when they needed it and lots of love and care....

When you get a rescue pet, you never know what they've been through. She's a good example of what a rough start in life can do to an animal. I had her from a pretty young age, so her first months must have been really bad.

Kath, I think it was a great idea to let Curly see Truffles one last time. It will be easier because her scent told her what she needed to know. She will probably take a few days but, I am sure she will be back to her good old self in no time. Again, I am truly sorry for Truffles' passing. Hugs, wheeks and purrs to you and all those precious babies!

I think you were right to let Curly know what had happened. The Hospice nurse for Ron's Dad told us to bring his dog in to see him after he died so that she knew what was going on. She didn't seem to grieve too much for him. She just accepted it. Poor Curly doesn't seem to have good luck with cage mates, does she. It's a shame that Truffles life wasn't longer, but the time she spent in your care had to have been living like royalty. You take excellent care of all of your piggies.

After I emailed the woman who runs our rescue to let her know, she emailed me back and reminded me that Truffles came into the rescue as a baby in very poor condition. Whatever was done to her at that young age must have resulted in her problems. I've never seen anything like this before in any guinea pigs so it was really hard to watch. I know I did the right thing; I probably shouldn't have waited as long as I did. When I first noticed she had issues, it was her cries that made me aware that there was a problem. After that, she never complained. It wasn't until yesterday that I heard her whimpering so I couldn't let her suffer.

It's nice that Miss Curley has her other 'child' back with her again. I'm sure that will help her feel better. She seems to have such a strong mothering instinct. I'm so sorry about little Truffles. But it's good that she won't suffer. You took such great care of her.

I didn't permanently put Goody back in there. It was only a visit. Goody is really active; she's on an equal, if not higher, level than Puzzle. I don't think Curly could handle her and don't want to risk overwhelming her. I think Curly deserves her own space now, with an occasional visit from Goody.

She seems like she's going to be fine. They've all been sleeping a lot but I think it's because it's been so dreary here. They all got extra snacks. I'm just keeping a close eye on Curly now. I'm not going to get another guinea pig.

I usually get another one, but I decided not to this time. Curly, Puzzle and Pikachu are all older now. I need to just keep a good eye on them to make sure they have no health issues.
