Female Marking

We've all heard about potential adopters or buyers not wanting a male dog because "they lift their legs and pee in the house", but not many regular pet owners realize that their female dogs participate in the same behaviour. I guess it's easier to think your dog is just breaking housetraining when she's squatting in the house rather than lifting the leg high.

Two of my girls are insane markers every time we go on walks. There is no other reason that Perdita and Suzuka need to squat every five feet or so to pee. Their bladders really aren't that big! It actually gets kind of annoying because I like to keep up a brisk pace, but when the girls squat I'm forced to stop while they squeeze out a thimbleful (if that much) of "p-mail" onto the ground. They both started marking as they got older, so I don't know if more females do it as they grow into their adult selves or if some girls just naturally feel they're in charge. Krista and Akane only pee when they need to on walks, and Akane is 9, so it's not just being older.

I've also seen a few cases of female dogs who DO hike a leg or at least ballerina one off the ground to mark. Yes, it looks as silly as you would think, but these girls definitely have an aura of "Anything you can do, I can do better". Watch out, boys!

From what I've seen, leg lifting is actually a learned behaviour. My male didn't start until he saw a dog at the dog park go for it. Some males ALWAYS squat, which can be hilarious when they're otherwise really alpha types.
