Cat's claws ruining furniture?

If your cat's claws are ruining your furniture, you should try a lemon juice/water mixture. Simply spray the mix on the furniture. When the cat goes to scratch it, it won't like the feeling of the lemon juice on this paws and hopefully will stop scratching up the furniture. This will save the cat the painful "ripping" out of the claws, the cost to declaw and your furniture!

Bitter Apple works ,too. I used it because my Cocker was a chewer, and discovered my cat HATED it. It's a natural product...no chemicals..doesn't seem to hurt furniture either..

There are sticky tape ( called Sticky Paws) you can get in most pet stores that you can put on your furniture and on the pots that your plants are in. The tape will not damage your furniture or pots that your plants are in. Bitter apple spray is also an alternative as well as the SCAT MAT or STAY AWAY by Con Tech. Also there are nail caps that come in colors to put on your pet- Soft Claws and Soft Paws- I think these are actually 2 separate companies that make the product (nail caps). As the nails naturally grow, the nail caps come off-so it works as a good reminder on when to start trimming your kittie's nails. One of these companies had a problem with the adhesive glue that is supposed to be safe-but turns out it wasn't & the caps wouldn't come off a cat- and the cat needed surgery to remove them.

1)www.stickypaws.com -for plants, furniture, carpet
2.)www.softpaws.com,www.softclaws.com nail caps
3.)www.contech-inc.com/products/ - for SCAT MAT or STAY AWAY for Cats
4.)www.cherrybrook.com Click on "Cat Supplies", then click on "Cat Grooming Supplies", Then click on "Quick Finder Nail Clipper for Cats" -- it is a sensor activated nail clipper, it will glow green when it is safe to clip.

Hope these sites helped.

My female cat started caawing up the sofa,I got her to stop by saying (loudly) NO!! when she started. She NEVER did it again. It's funny, when she goes to do it again she looks at me and it's like she's thinking UT OH!! I better not. So yesterday I bought her one of those scraching posts. Although she ain't got the foggyest idia what the thing is she will learn CATS ARE SMART!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm going to give this a try. My newest cat was not here when I had my chairs reupholstered; the last one did not destroy things. This one has already done a number on my chairs but they are still worth trying to save, I guess.

Won't lemon juice bleach the furniture? It will bleach your age spots on your skin and lighten your hair.

I'm going to try this, my one cat likes to scratch my leather couch, she has all sorts of scratch pads, but insists on using the couch, thanks for the suggestion.

I am going to try this! It sounds like a great idea!

Thank-you for sharing i hope it helps both ctas and people stay together longer.

This I will try. My furniture is suffering.

I have a manx cat and he is constantly clawing my furniture, so I will try this. What is the lemon mix to water? Say 1 lemon to 3 parts water. I do not want a mix that will ruin my furniture any more than what the clawing already has.

But how can my cat be stopped from destroying all of the wood of interior door fames? She has scraching posts, clawing boxes and a host of various toys, not to mention the dog that she delights in bullying. I have even tried putting pepper on the wood and at the bottom, but she just sneezes and then starts scratching.

I have this problem, also, but I am looking for an answer. Declawing
is a solution for many people but I don't believe in it.

I make short claws of all my cats and was buy in Petsmart special table to scratch for cats.
There are many things to scratch for cats in the Petsmart different sizes and with different prises.
I think can not to disclaw your cats.Claws for cats are protect them outside.
And nobody can not to be shure that in one day cat can to play and to run outside.
In the shelters can to adopt sometimes disclaw cats. And often they are very afraid of all.
They feel that can not to protect theirself without claws.
Becouse better and can now to find way which will be keep your cats, claws of cats and to keep your furniture and another things in the house.

How much lemon juice to water? How do you know if it is safe for the fabric of the furniture? Thanks.

I have three cats. One is a 28-pounder who thinks he's a mountain lion. My policy is simple. I BUY couches with the intent it will be ripped to shreds. Think outside the cat litter box. You got cats, you aren't going to declaw them? Get furniture that you don't care about. I can replace a couch I can't replace these three cats. My parents never bought nice furniture until all seven of us kids were grown and gone. So I learned well to make your home in harmony with your life and not the other way around. It helps to buy furniture where the guts match the exterior. That way when it's torn to pieces like a hulking mass of cloth it doesn't look so bad. Besides, with the couches as scratching post, they see to leave everything else alone.

THANK-YOU FOR BEING SENSITIVE TO THE CATS NOT A USELESS MATERIAL ITEM,
I wish more people felt like you, shelters euthanize too many over stupid reasons to turn in a pet and the pet is senteced to death what a high price to pay for having a natural instinct to scratch, cats do this when they wake up and stretch mostly, if you put a tall post near the cats sleeping area and they scratch and stretch it may help.
Cats are born with claws like we are born with our fingers would we remove our fingers, i think not. you except a pet the way they are as they are loyal to who we are.
they do not ask us to change for any reason and believe me not all pets get good owners but animals love who they are forced to be with no matter what.
again thank-you for really loving your cats and saying so.

This is a great idea but everyone has ideas about decorating. I
am considering buying new chairs but not until my cats would rather
use the many scratchers placed everywhere.
