Cat's are sleeping the winter away

Most of the day and most of the night. Is this just from boredom or do domestic cats do a modified form of hibernation during the coldweather months? I've tried buying them new toys to encourage excersize but they aren't taking the bait. They seem happy to just find a cozy spot and dream the winter away.
