Cat crunchie anyone???

Ok, so Rex totally grossed me out earlier. I have moved Skittles litter box in the laundry room and Rex went in there earlier and picked himself out a cat crunchie and ate it. BLAH! I chased him around and normally he'll drop things when I tell him too, but he had not intentions on dropping that thing. Is it normal for dogs to eat cat treats (if that's what you want to call it) left in the litter box? Rex got put in doggy time out and I moved the litter box yet again. I haven't owned an inside cat in a long time and never at the same time as I did a dog...so I don't know if it's normal or not. Why in the world would he eat that? Sugar and Nacho were looking at him like he was crazy! Another reminder why I don't let animals lick me YACK!

I wondered about this and then it occurred to me that a male dogs eat droppings because it is a natural way to keep the den clean when their mate has puppies.
If the dog is large you might try putting the box in a separate room and placing chain locks on both sides of the door. The cat can get in but the dog can't. If the dog is too small for that to work try to toilet train the cat or consider one of the self cleaning/flushing litter boxes.

I honestly would not even know where to start potty training a kitten! It was hard enough with my kids. I went to Target earlier and was looking at one of those self cleaning little boxes but decided to ask everyone here about them since they are kind of pricey. I guess I am as out to date with litter boxes as I am with potty training kids. And yes, Rex is A LOT bigger than Skittles. He is a yellow lab and Skittles is a tiny little kitten. Honestly I don't think Rex cares about keeping his area clean, it just looked tasty at the time.

If he is that big I would try the two chain locks first. That way you might solve the problem for under $15. The self cleaning boxes are pricey (I have one) and they won't save you a lot of work. If you do have to go that route make sure you get one that dumps the clumps in the back of the box. My box collects clumps in the front and it is too easy to open the trap door.

Yep a lot of dogs like that!!! Why is beyond me though. My sisters dogs especially like to do that!!! I think cat "presents" are a delicacy in the dog world=)

Yup, dogs LOVE to get ahold of litterbox treats. I don't know why...but you're not alone. Dogs I've had in the past did it, too.

OMG,I knew when I saw the title of your journal, EXACTLY what you were talking about!!! Years ago,I had a dog named Samantha that loved them warm and toasted!!!ROFLMAO---No seriously, she use to occasionally sneak down to the basement to scarf up a couple. *gags*
You know the only thing that the Vet could say after he laughed hysterically--
A)She's a puppy,she'll grow out of it
B) Apperently there's a lot of undigested "kitty food"left in them little logs!
CAn you believe it???
I didn't know whether to laugh out loud,or slap him!
BTW,Sammi did eventually stop her "raiding"

I had my vets cell phone number from a few weeks ago when Sugar needed an emergency trip, I never had to call her so I used my one phone call on this one! I was worried that the cat litter would hurt Rex and she said he will be fine. There are actually nutrients BLAH in the poop and that's why he went for it. Her suggestion was I get a new litter box that has a cover and keep it cleaned regularly. I can also face it where he can't get to it. As much money as I spend on treats and that is what he chose to nibble on this afternoon. I'm just glad to know Rex isn't the only dog out there that's done this! ha!
