Some people......argggggggg

Since we are all shelter/rescue folks, I know I can vent. I want to vent about folks who just do not understand how or what it takes to adopt an animal.

Our humane society operates the county shelter and I think folks think they can get a pet cheap. After all, it is still the dog pound in their eyes. However, it is not that way.

So yes, you will have to fill out an adoption application. And yes, it will be checked over completely. We will call the landlord, we will call your vet and we will call your personally reference.

Yes, we will spay/neuter before it goes home. No we don't want it to have "one grand day with a dame" and no we don't want it to have "even one litter."

So yes, you might not get to take the dog home same day.

Yet, there are still folks who "just don't get it." They are impatience and "want it now". Those are the folks who say "don't know why we can't take it now cause it will give you more cage space now or sound like you don't want to find it a home". They are impatience and start "acting out" as I call it.

I love looking them straight in the eye and say

"if you are so impatience that you can not wait a day or two for us to check over your app,
if you are so impatience that you can not wait for us to get the animal spayed/neutered,
if you are so impatience even after we have explained it all to you more than once,
then you are not the person I want adopting one of our animals as
you will be too impatience to housebreak it,
you will be too impatience to teach it basic commands,
you will be too impatience to give it love and proper exercise,
and more than likely it will come back to the shelter in less than a year.
So go get a stuffed animal at Wal-Mart."

Sorry, just had to vent.

You go girl - I agree completely! A pet is a huge responsibility and taking one on is not something you rush in to or take lightly on impulse. It involves a lot of time, money and love and if you get the right pet(s) the payoff is worth every dime, every minute and all of the love you have to give and get back!

Completely agree with you, Betty, & Beaglepawz, too. When we adopted Kelsie, we didn't mind the application or the waiting, Kelsie is worth it. You and the rest of the people at HSMC just want ot make sure that these precious furry babies get nice homes and loving parents, there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. As a matter of fact, I'm very glad HSMC goes through that process. I applaud you and the staff for making sure they get good homes. You're right, if they can't wait on a phone call, which is not a major catastrophy, then they won't have the patience to train those furry babies CORRECTLY and PATIENTLY. Keep up the good work, Betty! ^_^

Brava! <appaluse, applause> Well said. Adopting is not a impulse purchase like a new pair of shoes.
