Is today the day???

Toby, Available for Adoption
Today, I interview another potential adoptee for Toby the Golden Retriever. This couple is from Barnesville. I explained to them what has been going on with this poor dog and told them in no uncertain terms that if they were not serious about adopting him and not willing to be patient and give him at least 1 week in their home I was not going to even allow him to go with them for a trial, I am putting my foot down, no more of this 24 hour crap, if people can't handle a dog and give him a chance then they don't deserve him. He has been in my home for 3 days and I have had absolutely no problem with him at all, I don't know what they think the problem is. I keep hearing "He takes over my house" and "My dog didn't get along with him"...I have THREE dogs, and I am not having any problems. Of course there has been a bark here and there and a growl here and there from MY dogs, it is THEIR home and they are territorial animals...but THAT GOES AWAY IN TIME...They are fine now and it has only been one weekend. TIME... PEOPLE...TIME.....Give him a chance. I'm sorry if this journal sounds angry, but I get frustrated. The original owner tried to rehome this dog, and the person only had him an hour and a half and brought him back...This gorgeous dog, is loyal and loving and sweet, and smart, and just wants someone to love him and bond with him and teach him. He has already STRONGLY bonded to Kevin, which is NOT a good thing, I told Kevin he could not be there today for the interview just in case he goes with this couple. It would be too hard on Toby to leave him. He cried when Kevin left for work this morning, and ran back and forth between the front door and the deck door looking for him. He kept coming up to me pulling on my hand and whimpering, as if to say "Where did he go? Go get him" It was sad. I am afraid if I don't find the right home for this dog soon, I am going to be in trouble...everyone who knows me, knows how easily these animals can completely take over my heart...and I really am at the city limit.

Gail, you have a heart of gold! I can see why you are concerned--this dog has gone through enough already. How sad....

He is such a good dog, I sure hope his new home works out! Keep your fingers crossed, or I will have to be contacting the city to get a Foster License because I will be over the limit....I will just have to "Foster" him indefinately ;)

A complete change of environment has to be among the top stressful things for anybody or anything to go through. How can people expect a dog or cat to go through that without so much as one little bump in the road? Pretty unrealistic.. . . .

My thoughts exactly, and they poor dog not only is going through a change of enviroment, he is going through a complete change of family too.

I must have missed something awhile back. Thought this dog was already adopted out...?? I entirely understand your frustration with people who can't even take care of a single pet without having problems. I am taking care of nearly 40 cats by myself! Yes, it cuts into my free time a little and if I had some help I could probably improve their living situation a little bit..but for cripes sakes people. Some people just can't forget about themselves for even a few hours it seems.

I thought he was adopted out too, the people told me that they were possitive he would fit in, he met their dog in a neutral place and they seemed to get along just find, Toby seemed to be MUCH better trained than their dog was and they even admitted that, it was THEIR dog that was the problem....but why not work on their dog then? They said 2 goldens was just too much for them to handle. I have four dogs in my house right not and 2 cats and it is fine....no problems...I don't get it....everyone slept through the night, no one had any accidents, not one problem, other than him really missing Kevin when he left this morning, but he is fine now, I took him for a car ride when I took the kids to school and he loved it. People just don't know how to be patient and let the household adjust.

Maybe it is these times where people have no patience and need instant gratification. If everything doesn't work out in the first few hours, they give up. I have only placed one dog in the last five years so am no expert there, but with cats, it could take several weeks to adjust. I tell that to those wanting to adopt right up front. Give them lots of time! So...do you have any others who want to adopt this dog? If you need me to do it...I could put an ad in MeritCare classifieds for you. I know it is probably hard to let go also....
