Yes, BEAGLES!!!
Living in Madison County most of my life (1 1/2 years in CA), I have learn that beagles and coonhounds are hunting dogs for the most part. This county is filled with hunters, therefore beagles and coonhounds.
With working at the shelter, we get in alot of beagles and coonhounds. Most are found out in fields and woods. Why you might ask. Because if the dog does not hunt, it is left behind. Yes, you did read that correctly. It is left behind. If it don't hunt, then they don't want it.
You can usually tell when a beagle or coonhound is not a good hunting dog. They are scared of their own shadow, of loud noise, and love other animals including cats.
In the past week or so, our shelter took in over 18 dogs. Of the 18 dogs, 10 were beagles (two of them are beagle mix, but still counts). Ten beagles who don't hunt. You would think we are a Beagle Rescue instead of a shelter. Two of the beagles when to a real beagle rescue. Two of the beagles went to foster care. (one of them was a mix). And a couple went to prison. The rest are still at the shelter.
Right now, when you walk into our shelter, you hear the howl of the hounds. Cause everybody knows, "when one beagle starts barking, they all join in."
So if you are looking for a hunting beagle, we got the special kind. You know, the ones hunting for a good home, somebody to understand and love them.
