A BEAGLE in my DODGE
3 comments
I am sure by now if you have read some of my other journals and have seen the number of comments under my journals and other folks' journals, that beagles are not my favorite breed of dog and I would never own one. There are many reason for this and most can be found if you do read those journals and comments.
Reasons like barking, digging, organizing takeovers, thieving, and so much more. I will give them one thing. They are cute. But that is all.
Today was the first day of the PetSmart Adopt-a-thon Weekend. I was suppose to be there from 2-4. Since I was by myself, I decided one dog and a small one. I picked up the list of dogs who is going on saturday. There is 14. They are written down in an order based on size from large to small. So I picked Redford who was under the small size.
I told the shelter staff person to get Redford and let him potty before I take him. I head out to my DODGE Truck, open the door and there is a BEAGLE in the front seat. It would seem that Redford is a BEAGLE. How on earth could I forget that.
Redford was just sitting there like "what". I could not believe it. A BEAGLE in my DODGE truck.
Now if you have read my other journal titled my car named Hrothgar, you know I am a DODGE person. A friend made a comment under that journal about her beater FORD and her pack of beagles. I told her that a FORD was perfect for BEAGLE. (Furry, Orney, Rotten Dogs = FORD = BEAGLE).
DODGE is for Dogs Of Devotion, Graceful, Excellence--so not a BEAGLE.
Yet, here was a BEAGLE in my DODGE truck. I told him there was rules to be followed while in my DODGE truck. I told him "no barking, no puking, no pooping, no peeing, no changing the radio station, no singing with the radio either, no mooning the semi truck drivers, no acting like a BEAGLE, in my truck. And yes, I know for a fact that BEAGLES do those things in cars as I have friends who tell me stories about their beagles in their car.
Redford looked at me like "okay, let's go". We also had to go to the bank and thank goodness it had a drive up window. I turned in the deposit and out came a milkbone which Redford looked at me like "you didn't get one." I told him if the HSMC gets a service charge for that milkbone, he was going to have to explain it to the treasurer and that I did not care if she also did beagle rescue.
PetSmart was a little boring for the first hour. A few folks in. But it was 2:00 in the afternoon on friday. Most folks are still at work or at the bank cashing their check. However at 3:00, the weirdness began.
A private training session was about to start at PetSmart. The client had a dog who is majorly aggressive to people. The dog is a pit bull. Now everybody knows, I love pit bulls. So it was upsetting to me to know this dog was this way. This dog is a really bad example of one. Most pit bulls love people. This one did not. It loved its owners, but nobody else including the trainer.
Everytime somebody would walk past the training area, the dog would leap at the clear wall, barking and growling. Each time that happened, Redford got really scared. He was not the only one. But at one point, Redford was under my chair and would hit his head each time that dog would bark and growl.
I was so afraid Redford would have brain damage, we left a bit early.
It is dogs like that one in PetSmart that give pit bulls a bad name. However, I do have to applaud the owners for trying to get help for the dog before something did happen.
On the way back to the shelter, Redford curled up in the front seat and napped. While driving I thought about this time I spent with Redford the beagle and I was trying to figure out why we have had him for over 7 months. He is prison trained, housebroken, likes other dogs, likes people, is cute. And I have decided that Redford is the most non-beagle like beagle I have known. I have to come up with a different breed to call him since he might look like a beagle but did not act like one.
Or he is really a true beagle under all that cute and obedience just waiting for the day to overtake the HSMC and run it his way. Hmmmmm. I will have to think some more on this.
Redford still needs a home and I am hoping that saturday will be his lucky day. In the meantime, I will be keeping my eye on him.
