When we adopted Murphy from Little Shelter, he was 3 months old and was already abused...They sent us a card a week after we had him which said this... I Had no one to love - till you came along....sign Murphy... A year later, Murphy needed a playmate and I told little shelter help us find him a friend... Along came Riley, a Westie at 5 1/2 months that had been starved...He looked like a wet rat.... They instantly became Brothers... Thank … read more

My new friend

When I woke up yesterday morning the last thing I thought would happen was that I would go to bed owning another dog. I have an 8 year old Chihauhau named Sugar and a 3 year old yellow lab named Rex. Never did I dream I would want another dog. But when I went to check the mail there was a door hanger on my door from a Century 21 agent named Rosa Jiminez was advertising for her animal rescue group and had two pictures of dogs in need of homes. As soon as I laid eyes on Nacho's picture I knew I ha… read more

Bonnie Rose our new family member

We have just adopted Bonnie Rose. She is a rescue. We are thrilled to have her in our family. She is about 6 months old. She is house broken, crate trained, trained to do tricks, used to cats in her foster home and loves to play. She is not the typical border collie, she is quite calm. Very much a lap dog even. However when she feels she is suppose to work ( as her breed instincts are) whether playing ball or just chasing toys, getting the paper. She is quite the pro at her job. I have always re… read more

What a Can of Worms

Boy, I feel like I opened a major can of worms when I wrote my journal titled "long distance adoptions". Usually when I wrote my journals, they are for me, but I don't mind if folks read them. And if folks comment fine, I don't mind. But it got me thinking about all the shelters/rescues here on zootoo and the difference in thought about each of our own shelters and about other shelters. You can see it in comments and journals that folks write including m… read more

Rats? No. Chinchilla? Maybe.

After thinking about and researching rats for a month, I decided against owning a pair. While they sound like unbelievably fun pets, there were a couple of things that kept me from adopting them. First, they are prone to diseases, such as cancer and a condition called myco, which most rats have and which can become bad if they’re stressed. Owning rabbits who have a condition called pasteurella and a rescue cat that may have feline herpes has made me very wary of animals that have innate diseas… read more

Rats?

Lately, I have been wondering about whether or not to add to my pet family. It's funny because if you're a good pet owner, you probably have faced the same situation: it's a big deal to decide whether or not to add to your furry family! There are so many things to consider when bringing new pets into a home where there are already other pets. Will the larger pets leave the little pets alone? Will the new pets bring in diseases that will harm my current pet family? It's wonderful … read more

Long Distance Adoptions

Recently, I have been checking out what other shelters do to get adoptions. Seems each has some kind of adoption form folks need to fill out. Some shelters will take a day or two so they can check the app and some look it over for a few minutes and then adopt out the dog. But there are several shelters who do not adopt out of state. I am completely confused by this. I mean, I can understand with some rescue groups why they would not adopt out of state, but why a she… read more

Munchie Lives

Today I met a couple who came to our shelter to see what a dog named Munchie was so special that she was still in our shelter after 7 months. Apparently this woman had been watching our website seeing pets come and go but seeing one consistent theme. Munchie was there day after day, week after week and month after month. So today she decided to come see what was so special about this dog. The shepherd mix's picture didn't give any explanation about why she was still there. S… read more

Little Shelter - Huntington NY

My experience with Little Shelter in Huntington was wonderful. I recently lost my dog Rosie to cancer. I was very sad but thought getting another dog would make me feel better. I went to Little Shelter and chose a dog named Polly Sue. When we got home we went out in the backyard and she took a flying leap over my fence. I was so shocked and upset I really didn't know what to do. I called Joan at Little Shelter and along with Jodi and another guy from Little Shelter came to my house to help … read more

Ginger's First day in her new home!

My daughter has been wanting a dog for quite some time now..We just moved from an apartment where there were no pets allowed into our own home a few months ago, and My daughters birthday is right around the corner, so we figured it would be a good time to start looking for a new pet. We started our journey to the local pet rescue. They had only 3 dogs there, one was excessively loud, the otherwas very excited & jumpy, and the other was what I wouldsay "a very agressive&… read more
