Saturday at the SPCA Serving Erie Country
I just attempted to walk across our adoption lobby - adopters, prospective adopters, visitors, shoppers...we are full! The animals and humans are all looking stressed, due to the overcrowded conditions. In the Petique, our store, we have already had 6 puppies, four dogs, countless cats and kittens that were going home and needed supplies. It's noon, and only going to get busier in the next 5 hours. The transfer programs that the SPCA Serving Erie County actively participate in saved my dog and her sister from the streets of New Orleans. Dixie and Zoey arrived in May of 2006 - 6 weeks old and very ill. They had respiratory problems, no appetite, no energy. Their Mom was probably one of the still abundant strays left over from Katrina. No idea why she and her babies were separated. The SPCA Serving Erie County is the Best!
I wish everyone helping animals, from the tiniest Rescue to the largest Shelter, had all the resources necessary to do their job to the utmost of their ability, and save every adoptable creature of every kind. No animal deserves to be hungry, sick, frightened, unwanted, in deplorable conditions, or to die needlessly essentially because of lack of money. I wish we could all win this Makeover. I have been fortunate to be a staff member of the SPCA Serving Erie County, in Tonawanda, NY for 14 years. Our shelter has come a long way in those years, adding valuable programs for the animals and the people who love them. We have outgrown our building, originally built in the 1960's and remodeled many times.
