Gracie celebrates birthday at HSOP

What a great Saturday we had at our shelter! First it was a beautiful day. Second, a little girl named Gracie celebrated her birthday with us. While not unusual (although I’m always so surprised at the generosity of kids that do this) for a child to have a birthday and request no gifts for themselves and instead request donations from our Wish List for our animals, Gracie asked for something different. I don't know why I feel compelled to write this journal entry today, but I guess its something I've thought about many times but never had the forum. Its just my ramblings about this week in and around our shelter from my vantage point. For what that's worth. In the last 3 days we've taken in more than 30 kittens. I say more than 30 becuase I've literally lost count. In 3 days. I have 5 tonight sleeping upstairs in my guest bathroom where they will stay until old enough to be… read more

I am writing this the morning after. I told someone that I felt like I had just been through 3 months of labor, have delivered the baby but don't know yet whether its a boy or a girl. But what I do know is that no matter what shelter is selected to win the grand prize, we've won. The Humane Society of Parkersburg won today! A bunch of ordinary people with normal lives (or we used to have them) from a little town in West Virginia came together to finish in the Top 20 of a contest with more th… read more

Finding your passion

I am very lucky to have found my great passion. For years I looked for something that would make me feel better about myself. I had a good job. Had good friends, family, home and health. But something was missing. Then one day I volunteered at our shelter to drive a dog to Wheeling and that was the beginning.
