Chains - bad for lunging
Pros: Not many, other than it is a lunge line
Cons: Heavy, and they pull on the horse's face

Chains are never good for lunging. They are too heavy and pull on the horse's head and neck. The extra weight of the chain will make it hard for the horse to distinguish between cues and just the chain randomly pulling on him/her. Even worse is when people put the chain under the chin or over the nose when lunging as it is almost impossible not to constantly pull on them teaching them to become bad at being lunged and less reactive to more subtle cues. The nylon part doesn't bother me that much as it is always prudent to wear gloves when lunging and cotton can burn just as bad when it gets run through your hands.
