DMSO is an effective "carrier" to get medications passed transdermally. My vet has mixed up some topical treatments in the past with this as the "carrier" agent to treat localized problems when that was a more effective method than a systemic treatment. One caution is that you have to be VERY careful handling it and always use gloves, because it works just as well on humans!
