- Distressed breathing
A chemodectoma in dogs is a tumor of the neck, and can often be characterized by stressful breathing. Normally dogs breathe 10 to 30 times a minute. At rest, these should be silent, effortless breaths. The chest and abdomen rise and fall without signs of discomfort or distress and the animal is breathing through its nose. Your dog may also exhibit a dry, unproductive cough, and may be vomiting undigested food. If you suspect that your dog has a chemodectoma, your vet can help to confirm this in order to decide on an appropriate course of treatment. In some cases, surgery or radiation treatment can help to prolong your pet’s life.
