Red blood cell shortage
Medical name: Anemia
- Loss of appetite
- Easily worn out

- Yellow skin color
- Pale mucous
Anemia refers to the condition in which your pet has a red blood cell shortage. The condition is most commonly characterized by pale mucous membranes. To assess the color of your pet's mucous membranes, the easiest-to-find mucous membranes are the gums above the teeth or the lips. A nice, healthy pink is normal. If your pet normally has dark gums and lips, you need to find another lightly pigmented place, like the vulva in female animals or the prepuce (skin fold over the end of the penis) on male animals. Also, the inner eyelid (gently pull down on skin just below the eye) is another mucous membrane. Confirm a healthy pink tone ahead of time, so you recognize signs of trouble. Other signs of anemia in pets may include a loss of appetite, weakness or wearing out easily, a yellowish skin color, or a racing heartbeat. If you suspect that your pet may be suffering from anemia, your vet can help to determine the underlying cause and treat accordingly.
