Decades of experience set the Groom-o-Rama staff ahead of the pack.

June 29, 2010 1:15 pm | By Zootoo Editor Flinn D.

Groom-O-Rama is one of the oldest pet stores in Manhattan, offering grooming and boarding services in addition to a wide variety of pet products for sale. The facility's professional groomer has over 20 years of experience in the business and is usually booked days in advance. So if you want an appointment, I suggest calling ahead. My experience having my dog groomed there was great, but my opinion of their facility is not.

In two and a half hours Groom-O-Rama cleaned my dog’s ears, shampooed and conditioned his hair, trimmed him, shaved his belly and gave him a manicure/pedicure. When I picked him and gave him a once-over I found all of these tasks to be performed to the highest of grooming standards. However the store itself is cramped and dirty. I was overwhelmed by the smell – a noxious blend of animal vapors that assault your nose upon entering. I was also unimpressed with the way products were stacked haphazardly all over the place, making it nearly impossible to find something without asking someone.

However if you do ask someone for help, you’ll be pleased to find that the staff is attentive and doesn’t seem overwhelmed by the number of dogs and cats in their charge. I also appreciated that when I picked my dog up from his grooming session, he had clearly bonded with one of the staff members and was reluctant to leave. I’ve boarded and groomed my dog at places from which he literally cannot escape quick enough. His experience at Groom-O-Rama was clearly a positive one.

Bottom line: While in need of a deep cleaning and perhaps a move to larger digs, Groom-O-Rama has a wonderful staff that is highly experienced at what they do. I would board or groom my pet there again in a second.

Pros: Grooming standards of the highest order. Friendly staffers easily bond with four-legged customers.

Cons: Between the disorderly, cramped space and questionable odors, the salon might be ready to move to larger, cleaner digs.
