Am Staff, Pit Bull, Engl Bulldog - differences

February 16, 2009 | By Jennifer K. | 1 comment

What are the specific differences between Am Staff terriers, Pit Bull terriers, and English Bulldogs? I see so many similiarities that I find it hard to see their main differences. As a shelter volunteer, I'm often asked about dog breeds, and since "Pit Bull" often carries a negative connotation, I instead say terrier mix. But I think English Bulldogs have a very similar look, so I wonder if I'm mis-labeling.

If you go to badrap.org, this site has a lot of info on PitBulls in addition to information about the similar breeds. At one time, the American Staffordshire Terrier and the American Pit Bull Terrier were considered the same breed and dogs could be registered as both breeds. The most famous dog with this double registry was Petey from the Our Gang movies.

The reason these breeds look so similar is that they are all closely related.
