How to help encourage weight loss in canine amputee

February 16, 2009 | By Stephan B.

I have a Westie who had a hind leg amputated due to osteosarcoma. He is doing great 9 months after surgery and is so far cancer free. He lost 3 pounds from the surgery and 3 pounds after the surgery.

He's since gained back the 3 pounds he lost after the surgery. Our vets keep harping on the fact that he will be prone to arthritis and other problems if he doesn't lose the 3 pounds.

We walk 3-4 miles a week. He eats diet food. I've cut back on special treats. What else can I do to promote weight loss/maintenance? Has anyone else had this issue?
