Inner City Problems and Dog Fighting

April 14, 2009 | By John H. | 1 comment

Well, my hat is off to Bill. After his post, it would be a hard act to follow. So I will instead go into some of the issues that effect us.

Jersey City, NJ has a problem with abuse in many aspects: dog fighting, back yard breeders that toss the mother over our fence when they feel she has no value to them anymore (Yes this happened) as well as some of the usual situations where owners just outright neglect their pets saying " It's just a dog(or cat)".

The staff and volunteers at Liberty Humane Society in Jersey City, NJ are light years from the mindset. Each dog or cat taken in is treated as in individual like they should. As we all know, the majority of these pets if given a chance, will definitely thrive in the proper environment. We aim to do just that.

Meet our bully breed program B.A.D. Dogs. baddogs.libertyhumane.org/
The program run almost exclusively by volunteers, endeavors to train dogs with some basic obedience skills to make them more attractive for adoption. However, they don't just stop there. Depending on the dog's eagerness to learn and/or please, they go beyond that. Sweets is a BAD Dog ambassador who has earned her KGC Certification before even leaving the shelter. It is due to this success story as well as many adoptions that would not have taken place without these volunteers doing their training, that we feel we can do so much more if given the chance with a new, properly equiped shelter.

Thank you so much for reading, and good luck to all of the shelters!!
