Well to start with it takes a very highly trained dog to become a police dog. We would all love to think that all our wonderful German Shepherds can take on this task. However, this is not the case. Usually police enforcement gets their dogs from special training facilities that raise the dogs and train them. Then the dog must be paired with the right handler, which will then train with the dog. The trainers hand pick these dogs when they are young. The expense of training is very expensive. It can take over $25,000 to fully train one.
You can take a look at this site that migh give you some insight as what goes on working with K-9 www.policek9.com/html/associations.html. Maybe you would consider still doing K-9 work if your dog wasn't qualified? Something you might want to consider. Good Luck !
