N. Dakota considering having a horse slaughterhouse
I have some unpleasant news for your group. N. Dakota is considering allowing a horse slaughterhouse plant to be built. A $50,000 feasibility study is in the works either to build a new slaughterhouse plant or convert an existing building into a horse processing plant. This study is also to explore markets for horse meat. Critics of this proposal do not want North Dakota to become the destination to unload unwanted horses.
The majority of the letters to the editor of the Fargo, ND newspaper, The Forum, have been opposed to a horse slaughterhourse in N. Dakota, and opposed to spending $50,000 to determine if this is a "feasible" project.
I'm not sure how well networked the horse rescue people are, or how savvy they are in dealing with legislators and legislation. I don't know if there is anything that your rescue can do about preventing a slaughterhouse from being built in N. Dakota.
I just wanted a way to let horse rescue groups know about this proposal being considered in N. Dakota.
I've had a pony and a horse as a young child and a teenager, but I do not currently own a horse--just lots of cats.

Hi Debra -- this is an outrage -- firstly, it is Federal Law -- NO slaughterhouses in the U.S. -- you have to write and call your reps in State govt stating that you are vehemently opposed to any slaughterhouses in your state -- you cannot give up -- you must stay on it urging them -- we do not want our horses slaughtered -- there is no justification for this horror.
