I got Teddy as a rescued dog and he already had most of his teeth pulled. So sad. He has only 8 teeth left with only two on the right side (the canines) and only one left on the upper left (one molar). All the others are on the lower left. He swallows lots without even chewing. I have tried to brush his too but he won't let me. What happens when they lose them all? I have never had a pom before...only boxers that chew everything...even my wicker furniture LOL.
I work for a dentist and could clean his myself but he won't let me. I will look into the tooth products you talked about too.

I have the same problem. I took Dusty to get his teeth cleaned one year and they took two. Next year, three. Next year, six!!! The vet staff always get on me for not brushing his teeth but it is impossible to do that. They are prone to losing them. I think maybe having them cleaned about three times a year instead of two will help, but I worry about having him put under like that, maybe it's too much for his little heart...??
They can scale them without putting him under, so maybe I wil insist they do that several times a year.
Also, no table food. And, there are products you can buy (PetEdge and Drs Foster and Smith have some) to help reduce tartar. I use some dental tablets that are mint flavored he seems to like. Whether they are helping or not...not sure, but it helps keep his breath fresh!! :-)
