what to do about loose dogs

August 21, 2009 | By Carryallsmom | 3 comments

We are going on vacation soon. It will be to an area that has loose dogs. My dog is good will calm dogs, but otherwise is way too excitable and can become aggressive if the other dog is excitable. I will always have her on a leash, but is there anything special that I can do when we come upon loose dogs? I love taking her to the parks that will be nearby. They will be state parks and dogs are suppose to be on leashes, but I hear that many on them are not. Any ideas?

Meeting a dog off leash in inevitable. Just remember your dog takes cues from you whether verbal or through body language. Don't be afraid to ask the owner of the other dog to recall their dog. That doesn't always work so when a dog comes up to you loosen your dogs leash to avoid leash aggrssion that comes with a tight leash. Give lots of praise for both dogs. Good dogs! Nice and high pitch for positive reinforcement. Good lick, relaxand enjoy. -rachel

I think the squirt gun or water bottle is your best bet. You could put a bit of lemon juice in it - won't harm dog but might work better than plain water.
