Tail docking on pit bulls?

March 5, 2009 | By Sgraham21 | 9 comments

I have a pit bull who has a docked tail...I have no history on him as he was a rescue. Is it common for people to dock their tails or was this just an act of personal preference by the previous owner? The docking was obviously not done by a vet because there is a bald spot on the tip....why would they do this?!

Some times an owner will dock the tail at a vet when the dog has gotten older. That can cause there to be no hair on the tail tip. Most reputable vets wont do it as far as I've found, but what a person wants they can usually find it for the right price.
I did have a friend that had to do it because she said the dog kept hitting the 14 month old baby in the face w/ the tail when he was too excited. He healed up and doesn't seem to know the difference. And the baby still has her eyes.

Unfortunatley I think a lot of the dock in other dogs started because of kennel club shows. It's a higher mark to have them docked from what I understand. Personally I think it's way cuter to have floppy ears!
