Afraid of thunder and lightening

April 14, 2009 | By Annie H. | 2 comments

Our Honeybear is so afraid of rainstorms she just starts running and doesn't know where she is going. Most of the time now, we try to keep her inside so she won't be so freaked and run. Any suggestions to help her break this fear?

Unfortunately my Tessa is also afraid of storms and fireworks, but she does ok when I put one of my shirts tight on her. She doesn't run though but she shredded her crate and covering last night when the storms rolled through and I didn't hear her at first. She settled fine after I brought her in my room and she slept TIGHT against me. Expose a little bit at a time and dont tell the dog that its ok when its freaking out then they think that its ok to freak out. We caused this with Tessa when she was 8 weeks old and didn't see her wonder behind the motorcycle when Dad cranked it up. None of the rest of mine are afraid of storms or fireworks or gun shy. Tessa refuses to go outside on the fourth of July even two hours after the last firework in the neighborhood but just wants to be in my lap during.

guess there are behaviorists and i probably would not resort to this.. i believe the dog has to be exposed to the sounds to ingrain this is not bad...ie think you could find a tape/cd with the sounds of rain and at the time of playing the sounds give your dog doggie cookies. ????may work
