Pennies for Penelope
January 14, 2010 | By Ophelia906
Penelope is a 3 year old Shar Pei who was rescued by The National Shar Pei Rescue Network and adopted a couple years ago. Recently she was diagnosed with a severe case of kidney failure brought on by the breed-specific illness Shar-Pei fever. Her vets at Ohio State University's veterinary medicine program have unfortunately given Penelope a limited time line of only a year left. One option of treatment that can extend her life is to feed her special food.
As many of us know from personal experience, vet bills add up quickly not to mention the addition of a consistent regimen of expensive prescription dog food. Penelope needs 2.5 cans a day, costing almost $200 a month. Her owner is a grad student and makes a limited salary through graduate teaching (and can't get additional work due to being under contract with the school), and has been paying for her bills with financial aid. Not surprisingly, things have been getting tight for her.
A PayPal account has been set up and dubbed "Pennies for Penelope", in the hopes that kind souls will donate whatever they can afford toward the cost of food. If things get worse and we lose Penny, all extra food and funds will be donated to The National Shar Pei Rescue Network. Unfortunately, because the food that Penelope needs is by prescription only we are not able to accept direct donations of food. Please rest assured that any contribution you provide will go directly to little Penny herself.
If you have any questions please do not hesitate to send me a message. If you have any other animal-loving friends who may be able to donate, please send them the PayPal link and maybe include Penny's adorable picture too.
With love and hope,
