I have a cockatiel also, but she's really my sisters. Sometimes my sis leaves Ashley (the bird) in the dark in her room! She wanted so bad to get a bird and then she ignores it sometimes. I try my best to try to make Ashley happy but I think she is scarred for life.

Hi Kellie-

Sorry to be so long in replying. Your bird may be itchy up by her ear (a vet trip might be in order if she seems to be scratching a lot in one place), or she might be putting her foot up by her ear for other reasons. If she knows how to step up onto your finger, it could be her way of telling you that she wants you to pick her up. I had a bird that used to do that as he was saying "step up, step up." It was pretty clear what he was asking for. She might also just have cute mannerisms that include little birdie yoga. :) They are funny little creatures that do weird things - it's why we love them, right?

My advice is if you're worried or see any feather disruption or blood by her foot or ear, call your vet ASAP. If not, she's probably just trying to get your attention -especially if she's a single bird. Birds housed alone get very attached to their people and need lots of daily interaction to stay happy. She could be saying "hey you- get over here and play with me!"
