I'm so sorry to hear about that. Was she lost as in flew away or did she pass away? I have heard of owners finding "lost" birds. Have you called your local shelters, put up flyers and or put an ad in your local paper? If your birds wings were clipped she may not have gotten far, and even if not, she may have gone to someone else who called her.
If this doesn't work, or the bird did pass away, my suggestion is that you first look on www.petfinder.com. I just did a quick search and found a number of cockatiels up for adoption in Punta Gorda, FL. There seems to be a good bird rescue located there.
Check out this site: www.petfinder.com/search/search.cgi?breed=cockatiel&tmpl=&preview=&animal=Bird&preview=&zip=lakeland%2C+FL
I've adopted all my birds, and I highly recommend it. You're giving one a home that really needs it, and I swear they know the difference.
All the best luck, and please give my best wishes to your wife!
