In my experience, male border collies are more laid back and easy going, while females are more independent yet very motivated and willing when it comes to training. Males seem to have their own idea of the right plan when it comes to training. However, Every dog is different.

Both sexes are great to have, just depends on what you want. Male borders are fairly laid back with other dogs and people, pretty easy-going, and love to learn. If not neutered they think non-stop about the female down the road don't really think with their head. Females are 'bitchy' in the extreme. They have 'sharp' personalities, have quite a bit of attitude, very pushy, can be snappish around obnoxious dogs/people, and can be fantastic workers if she has respect for you and you respect her in turn.
I personally have female borders because I love the serious, intense way they approach life and all relationships. They live very complex emotional lives and can be your partner in everything you do, that is if you have a good relationship with them. Males are simply too sweet to survive in my household and would spend his days trying to please my girls without success.
